I think my mantis is dying =/

Yeah, like I said, I figured that having found him in the fall he was close to the end of his life. Sad to see him go, but I'll get another and move on. =)

I think my mantis is dying =/

Yeah I would say that is about what is happening. Too bad, I had started to like the little bugger. =(

I think my mantis is dying =/

Well, I figured he'd be towards the older end of the spectrum having found him so late in the year. I'm not completely sure if he's dying or not but he is moving less and more slowly. He also seems quite weak. He falls down off of things he's trying to climb things he never fell from before...

    Hierodula salomonis (Jade Mantis)

from prayingmantid.co.uk Hierodula solomonis - Jade mantis suitable species for any beginner. Feeding isn't a problem, they are vigorous eaters and will tackle anything. The habitat for this Mantis, is mainly shrubs and tree areas. Set up of the cage should be in a similar way with branches...

    HIERODULA Grandis eyes problems

We need someone that has both small and large glass terrariums to do the same test. If such a move doesn't cause the spots, it's probably the plastic, not the small size. Is fainting not simply "playing dead"? Many animals play dead when threatened as a means of defense, as plenty of animals...

    Acromantis on banana

Maybe, but can you say for sure? Mantids (including my own) have been known to eat honey if it is offered to them. Bananas may have a far lower sugar content per gram, but they still have a good amount.

    Hardest to Raise Successfully

Isn't the OP just interested in which is the hardest to raise from ooth to adult, not which is hardest to breed multiple generations of?

    My Praying Mantis

Wow, that's one big b****! No wonder the females wear the pants in the mantid household.

    HIERODULA Grandis eyes problems

My wild Chinese developed spots very soon (by the next day) after being put in his plastic container. However my plastic container is quite a bit larger than dokken's at 31 cm x 19 cm x 24 cm high. Quite a bit smaller than being outdoors, though. Also, when you say you move them from a larger...

    A load of bull?

When I think pretty, I think orchid mantis, idolomantis, ponies, princesses, etc. Like, say, an F-22 Raptor. Amazing, beautiful machine, but I would never call it "pretty". I guess it depends on how you define "pretty." Anyways, whatever you call it, I want one. :D Also, do you have a...

    HIERODULA Grandis eyes problems

Mine got similar dark spots within one day of being in his container (as opposed to being free to roam about a large screened in porch). I watched him quite a bit (cage is next to my computer). I never once saw him ram the plastic sides head first, he would just scratch at them with his...

    A load of bull?

Me too. Not pretty, but they look like they can inflict a (relatively) large amount of violence. Much like, say, an A-10 "Warthog". Man, I want one.

    A load of bull?

Yeah, they aren't pretty, they're just badass looking. Some nasty looking forelegs on those things. Are they just really picky with temp/humidity or what?

Selcective breeding: possible? ideal species and traits

I don't believe weight has anything to do with it. Bugs have enormous strength:weight ratio. The limiter on insect size is their method of "breathing." It simply can't scale up with the increase in size, after a certain point.

Is this a large enough container?

Or I could save him the trouble and go to Lowe's =). Wouldn't be made with bamboo, but it would suffice.

Is this a large enough container?

I went and picked up one of the larger plastic cages with the ventilated tops, which people seem to use a lot with hermit crabs. It's about 7.5"w x 12.5"d x 9.5" h and it's housing one Chinese mantis. Is it going to be big enough for him or should I go find something larger?

    A load of bull?

Does anyone sell them? They are pretty beastly looking. o_0

does feeding wasps/hornets/honey bees put mantis at risk?

Alright, good to know. I usually stick to the hornets, he seems to have the most interest in those. Plus they build their nests all over our house and it's either feed them to the mantis or spray them. Thanks for the info.

does feeding wasps/hornets/honey bees put mantis at risk?

Wasps, hornets and honey bees are in large supply around my home and the (fully grown Chinese) mantis seems to love them. Is there any real chance of them stinging and killing the mantis? I'd rather find something else than have him killed by his food.

    A load of bull?

Heck, why not 30? =P hmm. If a 10cm hierodula, etc. can take down hummingbirds and small snakes, what could a 30 cm hierodula take out? o_0
