Any ideas for the next step up?

Why not try breeding those two species? I'm sure that would be a hit. If you really want to go a step up though, maybe try violin mantids? They can be a bit pricey, and most consider them a harder species, but it seems as long as you have good ventilation, (A net cage, pretty much) heat, molting...

My Hierodula majuscula L4 Male & Female

A pair, no doubt. Not sure about the male being pale though.

Is it easy to get crickets & cockroaches to breed?

They can be pretty cannibilistic, it's pretty annoying. What annoyed me the most is when I tried to keep a bare bottom tank 20 gallon with a container a couple gallons big, filled with soil. The females would lay tons of eggs, but then the males and other nymphs would dig holes and eat just...

Wow, that's a nice variety. I really love how some of your bark mantids look like.

My Hierodula majuscula L4 Male & Female

I wish that green species could be found around here, any other mantids except grizzeled mantids and grass-like mantids are extremely rare. I've only ever found one green female which I could not ID. I ended up feeding that to one of my lizards, which I'm still kicking myself over since I'm...

    Japanese Gladiator Matches-Cruelty to Animals!

Sadly quite a lot of scenes from certain shows or documentarys are staged. It would take much more time and effort to film certain insects coming across eachother, mating, fighting, feeding, and what not. So it's much easier just to get a tank, decorate it a little, and add the subjects.

My Hierodula majuscula L4 Male & Female

Pics weren't that great for sexing anyways, so I'm sure you do have a pair. They're pretty nice though. I need to get some green mantids.

    Sexing Chinese Mantis?

As far as I know, counting the segments is the best way to sex most mantids. I believe it is 6-7 segments for females and 8 for males. Try fattening them up with food, with an expanded abdomen, and maybe with the help of a magnifying glass, it will be easy to count the segments.

Unicorn attack! (Phyllovates chlorophaea, adult female)

Oh....my....god. Stunning, just stunning, both the mantis and your photos!

    Silkmoth Keepers

YES! There's at least a good dozen trees around my neighborhood, most ornamental, but some are growing randomly along the woods close by. I always wondered what kind of trees they were, they sure do produce lots of seed pods, AKA "painfull spike balls" around my neighborhood, quite the terror...

You just helped me ID a tree right behind my yard, sweetgum! That's pretty encouraging, so would nothing but sweetgum be fine for the cats? What species could I keep? Just Lunas and Cecropia?

Just need to get something to put in them.

Really cool, I'm thinking of doing a similiar thing involving spare 10 gallons and communal setups.

    Only one mantis hatching.

A couple centimeters long is easily big enough to take mosquitos, and any other small flies you can find outside basking in sunlight. If you really want him, it's pretty darn easy to find food for them. You just need a net, or a container to quickly cup the insects in. If you don't feel like...

    Only one mantis hatching.

They'll eat just about anything, even some insects considered to be poisonous to other mamals, insects, and reptiles. Just make sure it's the right size, 1/4 the size of your mantis is a good place to start.

    Only one mantis hatching.

Are there no insects out and about right now for you? 80% of the insects I've ever fed to my mantids are wild caught. (Pesticide free area, of course)

What do you mean by local trees? Are there specific species?

    NO MORE CRICKETS!

Correction, DEAD crickets STINK. :P They do seem to stink in general, but it's not as terrible. As soon as you get a dead body in the hidden corner, it starts to stink within the hour and stays around. Hopefully since these new crickets are much hardier and less prone to random die-offs, they...

    My beautiful girl ;)

I'm a big fan of cryptic mantids, but I can't help taking second looks at these "regular" mantids, some, like yours, really have stunning colors.
