    Life span question

Not to put words in Phil's mouth, but I think he was saying that males are not expected to live that long, which Rick stated as well. Males of any mantid species are almost exclusively shorter-lived than their female counterparts.

    Zoe Is Irritated.

My wife and I got maried at 23 and 22 respectively. Before we were married, she had a daughter in high school at 15. She was involved with her daughter's father for a little over six years, before ending it with him. There is a lot of personal story between the two of us, her daughter, and...

Hey Rick, this is what one of my mantises thinks of your signature...

I can't even begin to describe how awesome that is.

    More Mantid Illustrations

Thanks everyone! Phil: I might be able to get ahold of a better camera to take some better photos. The only scanner I have available is not up to the task of doing the line pieces justice, let alone the watercolor (watercolor scans terribly anyway). Also: Of course I'm cheating.

    More Mantid Illustrations

Some of you know that I'm an amateur artist. I've been working on a personal project for the last month or so that's mantis related, so I thought I'd share the fruits of my labor here. My apologies for the somewhat low-quality; I have lousy cameras. The goal was to depict one image in three...

    Your view on Toyota...

I still like Toyotas, but I wouldn't buy one for a couple of years, not until they've had a chance to work the bugs out and make sure they're no longer selling death-traps.

Traded a couple Giant Asians with Paul. Packing was great, unfortunately one of them molted while in transit and didn't make it, but it was bad luck, not bad packing. Paul also threw in an ooth, which was not expected and very nice of him. :)

    Mantids in the future?

Unless something drastic changes our atmosphere, they're not going to get much bigger than they are already, either. Giant insects did exist millions of years ago, but the concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere was much greater then. They'll probably stay pretty close to where they are now...

    Which enclosure is better?

Either choice has its pros and cons. I'd shy away from the mesh, simply because of the tape issue. Yes, the tape is covered from the inside, but duct tape has a way of breaking down over time and leaking sticky residue out the sides. It's quite simply asking for trouble so I'd stick with the...

    How I Preserve Mantids

It may in fact help preserve the color better than other methods, but the why is still important to discuss. The month-long freezing period may in fact yeild better results than little/no freezing period, but it would be nice to have a working theory as to why. An experiment is called for, one...

    How I Preserve Mantids

Phil: Cooking is exactly where I learned those numbers. :) 145 for beef, 160 for pork, 180 for whole fowl (measured at the thigh). Good stuff to know. 10dor1fro32: Vinegar would have the same trouble that bleach would have. Strong corrosives will damage the specimen, although vinegar...

    How I Preserve Mantids

Bacteria (at least the garden variety stuff that we're concerned about) produce rapidly between 40 and 140 degrees fahrenheit. At 140 and higher they start to die, lower and they stop moving. The 0 F which is what most freezers stay at is cold enough to render common bacteria inactive and...
