    Baby food

Just make sure no lemon juice or garlic is an ingredient, find the plain flavor I think it's stage 2 brand Beech Nut. I put the baby food in a cup with a dab of water so it's like a smoothie texture, and then smear it on the mouth with a toothpick. Give the mantis water after so the baby food...

    Baby food

Does anyone feed their mantids chicken or beef baby food? They are high in protein, and especially for pregnant females really give a nutrition boost to produce larger ootheca. I've also used it for feeding weaker or injured nymphs that weren't catching as much prey as needed, the extra protein...

    Selective breeding for new traits?

Has anyone selective bred multiple generations of mantids to get a certain trait to show up? Roaches are kind of related to mantids, and hissing roaches have been bred to have larger than average sizes and color morphs. Let's take the chinese mantis as they are easy to breed and readily...

What mantid species live on Long Island, NY

I know we have the chinese mantis, but that's all I've ever seen. I heard a rumor carolina mantids live here but ive never seen them. I wanted to order mantis ootheca that arent Chinese, I hatch them in spring/early summer and release them into my shrubs. So I was wondering what other species...

    Carrot Controversy

I feed my crickets carrots and its not hurt my mantid. Crickets also eat cat kibble, romaine lettuce, white bread, and apples. I get crickets that come with brown dead ones, I throw the dead crickets out, but feed off the live ones and this too never caused and issue. I saw mentioned that...

    Idontwannamolt Diabolica

I had this with a hissing cockroach. All its siblings matured 3 months ahead, and it was alive but growing very slow. It ended up maturing 3 months late and had deformities in exoskeleton so bad it lived a week and died naturally.

14 ooths from 1 Iris oratoria!!!

I have a chinese mantis that lays one ootheca a week! She eats every day. If mantids are like roaches as long as they mated once all will be fertile. I had a hissing cockroach mate once and be fertile for 3 years without mating again. Broods were smaller as time went on but each time she was...

    Egg sac!

Make sure to offer Mom food and mist with water right away, they get VERY thirsty right after laying and hungry!

    Feeding dead prey

Not dead just cold so it's barely moving. My mantis has to have it moving slowly that way it gets defensive.

How to tell if ootheca already hatched?

I found an ootheca outside in my shrubs. It's dark brown almost black and looks dirty, I'm not sure if it's old or laid this year? All "new" ootheca I see are light brown, but if this was laid it is 4 months old and perhaps wind and rain dirtied it?

spotted salamander eggs (I think)? HELP!

I fed my spotted salamander larva live blackworms, frozen bloodworms/daphnia/oxheart, and if I found it tiny earthworms. These salamanders are pigs the adults can get too obese from eating too much! Be warned they live 25+ years and burrow under soil for most of their lives.

    Tadpole Progression Log

I heard captive bred have yellow bellies as the red belly is from diet in the wild.
