Any ideas for the next step up?

+1. Easy to get, easy to release, easy to feed and house. And, perhaps most important, easily identified as a mantis... they are THE classic mantid build, and (depending where they live), perhaps the one they're most likely species they will encounter in the wild, And, as Angel pointed out...

    Requesting photos with black background

You're welcome to use any of mine you can find. However, none were shot with a macro lens, so quality will suffer. There are a few on the Tennis Ball thread that are on white or close to white backgrounds. Pretty easy to dig out the mantids in the photos. Good luck!

    Unusual weather of 2012

Yeah - my brother lives in Michigan (still), and said a number of different "blossom festivals" had to make alterations because of the WARM weather. Now the COOL weather could present a new set of complicatios. Yikes!

Any ideas for the next step up?

Where are you located...? Someone in your area can probably donate the nymphs of ooths you'd need to get through the summer.

    Silkmoth Keepers

My advice (despite some mixed reviews on feedback) is Bill Oehlke. Either google his name, or go to http://www3.islandtelecom.com/~oehlkew/ and he should have an inventory list. Cecropia are the largest, most impressive (imo) and easiest to rear. And they have one of the most impressive...

    Silkmoth Keepers

Luckily, Sweetgum is just about THE most popular host plant for most of the American species. It's all you'll need. Polyphemus, Cecropia and Luna all love it.

    Silkmoth Keepers

Yeah - I'm not sure what you have there normally - I know you have Lunas, and I think Cecropia. Both eat a wide variety of plants. SweetGum, Persimmon, Birch are all good choices. Scout your neighborhood, then ask if you can trim a few leaves (at first). Since they're local, you can even...

    Idolomantis Consolidated

Yeah - I had considered elevating the front of my enclosure to put them at a slight angle, but just didn't bother. In the VAST majority of cases, I had to personally remove the exuvia, as all 4 legs were still firmly attached. This is the positive quality of the spongy carpet liner. However...

    Silkmoth Keepers

Living in Orlando, you shouldn't need to grow anything - you can just clip off your local trees (with the owners permission, of course). Or you can just buy cocoons, and free any eggs that are produced - skipping the whole caterpillar / feeding issues. It's only a 5 or 6 day enjoyment of the...

Mantis Photo Gallery - everyone contribute!

Do you have a smart phone? My mom is about as anti-tech as you can get, but she takes fabulous pictures with her iphone. I can get pretty darn good ones with the ipad, as well. It's all automatic - even the focus.

    Anybody collect g1 transformers?

Yeah - I bought an old Baron Karza for my desk, years ago, which was my introduction to ebay. My adult-aged mantis (re)obsession happened a month later. Oh, childhood...

    Going to NYC

I went to me first Korean restaurant in Manhattan, with a friend of mine who kindly guided me through the experience. They served my this gigantic bowl of... salad? All the ingredients - from veggies to squid - were arranged like slices of a pizza - absolutely gorgeous. They then mixed it for...

    Idolomantis Consolidated

Good points, all around. Some notes: I suggest some kind of liner on as many surfaces as possible with Idolos - simply because I experienced more incidents of misformed legs (from trying in vain to grasp the glass with still-forming legs) than from side-molting. Once I had the lining on the...
