My Mantids Love these Drone Flies!

Flies also have halteres instead of the extra pair of wings. Sometimes it's hard to see them, other times they're pretty evident.

    I have weird males

I second everything Ntsees said, including the males trying to mate with female I. oratoria.

    forum trends

I like what I'm reading. I think the past couple of months have had way too much weird humor (I know it's subjective)/off topic discussion in threads that are either meant to be serious or have nothing to do with the topic Like a thread with picture of T. sinensis with "Mass Effect" playing in...

New Jersey is kind of cool

It's the hind wings rubbed against the abdomen though. Unless they do both.

    Metallyticus violaceus consolidated

+1 I'm really starting to get interested in these guys. I want to personally compare their behavior to other mantids and roaches.

How Many Mantids Have You Had?

Different species owned (Regardless of whether they were bred or whatever). Some of these I've had a lot more than others and a few I've been dealing with my whole life. So despite the short list, please don't consider me some sort of novice. I just don't have time or space to deal with the...

Adult Female Chinese Praying Mantis not eating

Not to be a negative whatever. But I recently caught an adult chinese female in New Jersey and she died after a couple of days in captivity. Clearly due to old age. So please do not be surprised if she starts slowing down and dies. They don't live for a year in the wild and having lived her...

    Seasons in Southern California

Chinese would probably be best. They are more calm, and their larger size may win the hearts of the little kids. I've gotten clawed and latched (rightfully so) by many Euros after picking them up. But I've never gotten attacked or drew a threat pose from Chinese. Now, that's not saying they...

New Jersey is kind of cool

Oh I'm sorry guys. Didn't realize how vague I was being with my descriptions. I'm in Mercerville-Hamilton Town Square 08619. Ismart, out of all of the mantids I've seen, no males, sorry. But I'll keep an eye out for you though. I had one female lay an ooth. After my visit here last year I...

I have no experience with these but I would separate them just in case the male gets desensitized. Awesome pics man. The cast looks like that of a roach.

New Jersey is kind of cool

Near Trenton. Ismart they're literally everywhere. The only bad part is, I can't really get them. I walk along this complex where I see dozens of them on the screens of people's back patios, but I can't really waltz up there and pluck them off, I can only imagine how many people would call the...

Evidence for Genetic Color Determination in Mantids?

Thank you for the literature. Finally. I figured color change was something that was determined by the environment, it's just you can't rule out ***-linked genes simply because parthenogenetic individuals are "clones". Like gripen said, mutations do occur, so some of them may not be clones.

    Name your favorite species

What is your favorite species of mantis? That I want: Budwings and widearms. What species do you enjoy keeping the most? So far, Litaneutria sp. But the nymphs are sort of a pain. So S. limbata. What species of mantis would you recommend for a beginner? From my experience, I. oratoria. Very...

Evidence for Genetic Color Determination in Mantids?

First of all, why are you asking me for a citation? I won't give one to you, go look for yourself. Anyone who knows anything about genetics knows that mutations can occur. And that's ASSUMING that there's some chromosome that determines color, which is what this whole thread is about. You want a...

    Twinkies

Awesome pics, but please be careful. Ladybugs can and will eat mantis nymphs. Had one kill three Tenodera nymphs once.

Evidence for Genetic Color Determination in Mantids?

Was gonna say that until I scrolled all the way down. Gripen's right.

New Jersey is kind of cool

Alright then, here's to hoping I get plenty of fertile ooths. Don't tell, but a lot of my mantids like to help me with my studies :ninja: but it's fall break, so it's allowed. :tt2:

New Jersey is kind of cool

I'd assume so, but you never really know. Like I said last year I found some, not many. As long as these females are fertile.

New Jersey is kind of cool

According to locals, this has been an uncharacteristically warm fall (warmer than last year), so it's around the low 70s, not cold at all. I'm actually surprised I haven't seen any males yet. Last year during this time I found carolina females and a couple of males, but no T. sinensis. My cousin...

    Metallyticus violaceus consolidated

Awesome thread. Hope others can contribute. I'm interested though, if the nymphs can live with adults, do they not consider nymphs food? They actually distinguish non mantis food from smaller (edible) mantids?
