    Mites in springtail cultures?

I was just doing a little reading about sprinngtails. Some people say to keep the cultures on mite paper or mite proof surfaces. Is this really a concern? HAve any of you had this problem? Just to make it clear I don't have mites in my cultures. I was just curious if this is really that common.

How to differentiate pine from hardwood?

Can you provide a picture? I can't guarantee that we can ID it but pictures will help a lot. Other than that pine is significantly softer than most hard woods. If it is wet and moldy though it will all be soft.

My big boy just got his wings. It's both a happy and sad day for me.

Thank you. He is my favorite mantis. He has so much personality.

Has anyone else seen a mantis get its arms caught on its head?

Oh, it is. You can tell they are confused because they caught something and want to eat it, but can't get it to their mouth.

Has anyone else seen a mantis get its arms caught on its head?

I have been raising a lot of nymphs and a couple weeks ago I noticed some of them would get over excited about food and miss the prey then get their feeding arms caught on their head. It was pretty startling at first, but they always got them loose. As they got older they stopped doing it. I'm...

    Kevin Young/Moonlight Mantids

You can get those 5oz cups from Walmart and some screen from lowes. It is super cheap to make a ton of those cups. You can get feeders pretty much anywhere online. I have a bunch of hydei cultures I am trying to get rid of if you need them.

What do your friends and family think?

My mother is terrified by bugs, but she loves my mantis'. She won't touch them or let me get near her with them, but she loves looking at them in the cages. My aunt is also fascinated with them. My brothers and dad think it's a bit wierd though. They only like the fact that I am selling them...

    Good reptile incubator

I'm interested in this as well. I am in need of an incubator and hate diy projects. Every time I do a diy project I usually end up spending enough money to equal a pre built piece of equipment.

How do you prompt your mantis to crawl onto your hand?

I was just wondering how you entice your mantis to walk on your hand? I have been using a paint brush to give them a gentle nudge and get them moving. Is there a better way?

V Flytrap doesn't stay closed to digest the flies

If you are feeding dead flies they won't stimulate the hairs inside the trap after it closes. If they don't "feel" an insect struggling it will open back up the next day.

Advice for anyone wanting to keep pitcher plants in a mantis enclosure

If you are truly wanting to put pitcher plants in your enclosure you can put a cotton ball in the top of the pitcher to keep your mantids from becoming lunch. I did some research a long time ago about keeping frogs with pitcher plants, and that was the concensus. This shouldn't hurt the plant as...

New to Mantids, Need urgent help!

Just a quick note about using the mesh and rubberband. When removing the band make sure to roll the rubber band down instead of trying to just pull it off. If the mantis is on the mesh it can snap and cinch around the mantis if you try to just pull the band off. I had a near miss with my orchid...

New to Mantids, Need urgent help!

Is there any ventilation in the jar? From the pictures it looks like the jar doesn't have any holes. Excessively high humidity with no ventilation can effect mantids. That could be the cause of her not eating. You might try putting mesh over the jar and securing it with a rubber band and leaving...

Does anyone freeze their unused fruit fly medium?

I recently made a batch of fruit fly medium, but I made enough for three cultures. I don't have a use for that many ff so I just put it in a plastic bag and threw it in the freezer. Has anyone done this? Does it work as well as the fresh medium?
