I was just doing a little reading about sprinngtails. Some people say to keep the cultures on mite paper or mite proof surfaces. Is this really a concern? HAve any of you had this problem? Just to make it clear I don't have mites in my cultures. I was just curious if this is really that common.

Can you provide a picture? I can't guarantee that we can ID it but pictures will help a lot. Other than that pine is significantly softer than most hard woods. If it is wet and moldy though it will all be soft.

I was just wondering how you entice your mantis to walk on your hand? I have been using a paint brush to give them a gentle nudge and get them moving. Is there a better way?

If you are feeding dead flies they won't stimulate the hairs inside the trap after it closes. If they don't "feel" an insect struggling it will open back up the next day. 

If you are truly wanting to put pitcher plants in your enclosure you can put a cotton ball in the top of the pitcher to keep your mantids from becoming lunch. Just a quick note about using the mesh and rubberband. When removing the band make sure to roll the rubber band down instead of trying to just pull it off. If the mantis is on the mesh it can snap and cinch around the mantis if you try to just pull the band off. I had a near miss with my orchid...

Is there any ventilation in the jar? From the pictures it looks like the jar doesn't have any holes. Excessively high humidity with no ventilation can effect mantids. I recently made a batch of fruit fly medium, but I made enough for three cultures. I don't have a use for that many ff so I just put it in a plastic bag and threw it in the freezer. Has anyone done this? Does it work as well as the fresh medium?
