    some shots

What a tiny mantis with a huge head! Those first two pictures are adorable and comical at the same time!

    Ponder Pictures

Wow, she's more beautiful than I even imagined! LOVE the banding on the wings! And her eyes are so cool; in a couple of pictures, they look like they're saying, "who, me?" Your shots are very nice, and I love your choice of backdrop. This thread has put the final nail in my coffin: I...

    Empusa pennata pair

Very nice pictures, and yeah, the thing that stood out to me the most was the male's antenna! The black background with the black/dark blue cover make me imagine that you have a mantis photography corner... :D Your photos are very professional.

    More free range talk

I agree with Krissim... Nice corsage! :D What a relief to find her. This is why I don't think I could ever free range...

    My first ooths!

We can only hope it's a premonition. :D My dreams usually involve finding lots of exotic (including blue, something about that color) mantids and ooths around a particular tree near my house...

    Strange Observation

That's a very cool observation. It does make you wonder how they sense that, if it was a reaction to the rain. I was thinking humidity but then why didn't they react just before the downpour? Huh... Only on this forum...

Ladies and Gentlemen...This is how I'd preserve my Mantids..

I had to make an insect collection for a biology class... I found that instead of putting pins through the wings themselves, I could cut out a narrow strip of paper and then pin it on both sides taught across the wing. And it is helpful to have a trench, like Sticky said. But if you can get...

    Raptorial Problems

So the raptorial curve itself is intact, but the little foot they stand on (tarsus, I believe) is missing? I'm inclined to think he can live a fully functional life if he has easy-to-climb decorations, which it sounds like you're doing. One of my nymphs came to me missing a front tarsus, and...

    Unintentional Cricket Breeding

This. :) I've found they tend to crawl into what they perceive as little hidey-holes and it's easy to get 'em that way.

    eastern tent caterpillar (Malacosoma americanum)

Delicious! So, I'm assuming nothing untoward happened to Twitch? We've got a pretty heavy infestation over here on the west side too, and I can't help but see the nests (which I do everyday) as an all-you-can-eat free mantis buffet! I never thought about them being toxic, but I was concerned...

Update on All of My Mantids

Jeez! Haha! That's a lot of little bugs for just starting out. Sorry to hear about Skittles... hopefully he'll start eating again soon.

    ANOTHER Surprise

Why do I get the feeling that you've done this before? ;)

    My first ooths!

Yay! That's exciting. Sort of my dream to find a wild ooth or mantis at some point. (Literally: I've had dreams about this. ;) ) You could also let them go if they get to be too much to handle, since they're naturalized. But I too have heard they have a low survival rate initially.

Just got back from 27th annual Bug Fair at Natural History Museum

Fun pictures! I really like the tons of ooths for sale, just sitting out in the open... wonder how many are fertile. I wish we had something like this where I live! The wasp nest cross section looks pretty cool and that polar bear is impressive.

    Europe bound...

Tschus! Enjoy your trip! Loved this response: Haha, only on this forum!

    My first Mantis!

Haha, isn't it funny how proud we get of them over each of their new accomplishments? :D

Well the wasps are gone and woke up too this treat wanted to share with everyone

I can't imagine trying to separate so many curious and tiny babies! If I ever get to this point, I will be doing transfers in an empty, plugged bathtub! How did you manage to keep them all contained? (Or are there the inevitable few losses? :D I just got a flash of card dealer dealing out...

    Praying Mantids Keeping Aliens

Just received a copy of this latest book, hardcover edition. Very excited to delve further into the depths of mantis husbandry! So many pictures and so much more detail than was able to fit in Keeping Aliens (which was a great book to start with). Thank you very much for the time you put into...

    Parasphendale affinis

I like budwings... one of the species I first considered getting because of their size and reputed docility to handle. May still get one in the future; they have a unique look, that's for sure! :D Looking forward to Ponder's pics.

Can Lieutenant Dan Survive with 1.5 legs?

Best of luck with her! Sounds like it's going to be a challenging molt and I am hoping for the best for you and LD! :)
