    Got Accepted!!! Whoo hoo!

Do you have any idea what you plan to do? By that I mean do you plan on going to grad school for a Masters or PhD? If you plan on going into research you will want a PhD. But that brings up a concern. If you plan on going to grad school, DON'T get a BS in entomology. Get a BS in general biology...

    Attack of the Carpenter Ants

Afraid you won't get to see any carpenter ants explode in Michigan. The species phil referred to does not live in North America. I will try to remember to find some info on where they are found. You can use a number of commercial baits OUTSIDE of your house to eliminate the colony. Most of the...

So what do you all think, is this crazy?

Hey Phil! I see Bison nearly every day. Feel free to come up for a visit any time you need to see one. They are also "on the menu" at a couple steak places in town. Mantidlord, The most commonly accepted measuring method in use is as Phil described. You do the old transect method. You check...

    Congo green mantis?????

Not sure what species is shown in your photos. But they do look much like the Alalomantis sp I got from Frey a while back. Thought there was not such a size difference between the sexes. But the blue spot and small teeth along the thorax are the same. Alalomantis sp are from the same general...

    Mantids in Science

Your NOT required to do any experiments? I took Insect Behaviour and had to do the experiments. I studied prey selection preference. How does predator satiation affect prey size selection. Another idea would be to check prey size preference for "social" mantids and non-social species. I think...

Have a question about plant growing substances...

I have been using "Water Soluble All Purpose Plant Food" from Miracle-gro for several months now. I apply it to the soil of potted roses. The roses are then put in the cage, (pot, soil, and plant). I have not had any trouble caused to my Indian sticks or Spectres.

    Spirobolus walkeri

    Best of luck with them!

    Spirobolus walkeri

If you get another chance, go for a different *** ratio. 3 females to each male. And plan on shipping several immatures to Rebecca. Thats where my first group will be going, (unexpectedly maybe!). About how long are they? Do you know if they are adults yet?

So... when can I get a couple? :D

    Ants

Hello, Not sure I'm the person you had in mind, but I have been keeping ants for years. So let me give you 2 cents worth: That is a pretty cool set-up that they have at Amazon! You could try it with a large ant like Camponotus sp or Pogonomyrmex sp. But I would be hesitant to try it with any...

    Is there a millipede?

I suggest you PM Orin and see about buying a couple millipede books from him. Both books he has are about the best "general information" you are likely to find. Breeding of different species are covered rather well in both books. The AGBs are pretty much hit-or-miss breeding wise. Some people...

    Millipede ID

   Yes, I have found a couple other gaffs as well. I wonder how much is due to the translator and how much is mistakes in the original text. It does list N. annularis as a synonym of N. americanus. So the taxonomy may reflect what was known at the time of the original German...

    Millipede ID

Good catch there Orin! Case of thinking one thing and typing another. I meant "A. gigas" rather then "AGB". I intend to continue to call the critter A. gigas because that name is so well known and commonly used. I got a copy of "Millipedes" by Shura Sigling for Christmas! Is this the book you...

    Millipede ID

For those who are interested, I did find a great site covering taxonomy. www.catologueoflife.org/annual-checklist/2010/ Click on the seach button and enter a genus name. It will provide some very interesting results! Orin, Tonkinbolus IS an accepted millipede genus with 2 known species...

    Millipede ID

The first one I found was T. dollfusi. It was described as being formerly Anadenobolus rubropunctatus from Thailand. Is the genus Anadenonbolus found in SE Asia? I know your book covers 4 species from Puerto Rico area.

    Millipede ID

Hey Orin, Cool, I'll try looking that name up. Is the genus Tonkinbolus valid? In other words, which genus name is the accepted one, Tonkinbolus or Apeuthes?
  18. Hypoponera

    Millipede ID

Hey Orin, Your guessing is very wrong. I have said book. It is out of date in terms of species info. As you pointed out regarding Epibolus pulchripes, more keeping experience has been gained since the book was published. I suspect more information is availabe now on most of the species that the...

    Millipede ID

Who is this world-class taxonomist? Is he a millipede specialist or does he come in from another area? When did he ID the specimens? What reference was he basing his determinations on? Is it available somewhere? I have seen several species in the genus Apeuthes listed/shown on the German forum...

    Millipede ID

Narceus sp don't have tail spines. So I think will have to go along with Apeuthes sp. I probably won't get an "exact" species determination with out a killer key and a dead male to disect. I will try posting the photos on the millipede section on another forum. Maybe some Brit will be able to ID...
