looking 4 feed back on run in's with the fed's

I have had a run-in of sorts. At least with the USPS! A pair of adult female Pseudovates peruviana were sent to me by a forum member in Germany. The package arrived almost 2 1/2 months AFTER shipping. Seems the box was opened and the two mantids were held in Colorado until they died. The box was...

To beat A dead horse agian

I do appreciate Arizona's views on guns! In fact, that's where over half of my collection is sitting! By the way, did you ever get those PMs and emails I sent awhile ago? I never heard back from you.

To beat A dead horse agian

Hey Phil, Have you tried contacting the an extension officer? There was a good one that worked at the Uof AZ in the early '90s. Another one to ask would be Carl Olsen in the Entomology dept at the U of AZ. Carl is still there. I don't recall AZ being too bad regulations wise. But laws do...

Whats the average life span of a Rhombodera basalis?

I think that female was easily pushing a year old. She was an adult for 8 or 9 months. She was kept at only 75-80F. My bug room has heating issues! I just went back and checked. That female was hatched late May to early June of 2008. So about a full year life span.

To beat A dead horse agian

Hey Rick, There may well be something to it. What state are you in? Got to know your state's laws and regs. Maybe yours is one that is pretty strict. Then again, all the confusion may simply result in "NO" just to avoid the possibility of a problem. Goes back to that head in the sand bit...

    Katnapper - (US)

At the beginning of May, I got a surprise package from Becky. She had remembered that I mentioned wanting to try the Texicorns again. So without any warning, she sent an ooth! Great surprise indeed. It hatched on 25 May. Over 50 little critters popped out! The ooth arrived well packed and even...

To beat A dead horse agian

Hard getting any info on this subject isn't it? Even forum members try to "hide" the issue. Guess we will be OK if we all just stick our heads in the sand! Like you, I had the same questions. I got tired of not getting any help also. So I contacted a federal USDA inspector here in New Mexico. I...

    Yen Saw - (US)

Just got a small box from Yen. Three L. minor ooths arrived in great condition. He packed a single nymph with the ooths. By the time the ooths arrived, that single nymph had been joined by another pair! All three nymphs are doing just fine. Can't wait to see how many more show up. Thanks!!

    ismart (Paul) - (US)

Just got another package from Paul! Got a few more cool additions to the pinned collection and a very cool surprise! I had mentioned wanting to start a few ant colonies and wanted to try P. imparis. The surprise? 3 beautiful P. imparis queens!! No need for me to try finding them here! Thanks...

    M. religiosa diapause/breeding 2009 season

I still have a total of 19 left. But only 6 adult males so far and no adult females. But I had noticed that the remaining nymphs are of two sizes. So I think I have 3 more males who are just late bloomers. If so, that will give me 9 males and 10 females. Odd as it may sound, I've never seen a...

    M. religiosa diapause/breeding 2009 season

Hey Ismart, Are yours "normal sized"? Seems mine are noticibly smaller then the other Europeans I've had. Maybe I've just been underfeeding them!

    Katnapper - (US)

I just got a pair of ooths from Becky. Nothing really exciting at first until you realize these were ooths I had mentioned wanting several months ago. And they just showed up out of the blue! No request for money or trade. Very generous indeed!! Packing was top notch and she even provided...

    Keeping Hissers Warm

The closest I could find is a product called "Insect-a-Slip" at Bioquip. It has not been shipped yet so I do not know how well it works yet.

    Polyergus ants

Again, I would need to see the ants to give you a positive ID. But red imported fire ants, (RIFA, Solinopsis invicta), are very common in TX. However, there are many other ants that could fit the discription as well. There's also at least one species of native fire ants, (Solinopsis xyloni)...

    Polyergus ants

You will need to provide a photo of your "fire ants". Ants are very hard to ID correctly even with the ant in front of me! I have not been able to locate any mention of actual fire ants, (Solinopsis sp), in CO. However, you should have no trouble finding the much larger harvester ants...

    Keeping Hissers Warm

Don't use vaseline!! At temps above 75-80F, it starts to get runny. It will be running down the side of your tank in a matter of hours. Once it gets fluid-like, you will start to find smaller nymphs stuck in it and dead. I have some Fluon coming and expect it to work better.

    Keeping Hissers Warm

I keep mine in a ten gallon glass tank. The bottom has about a 1 inch thick layer of moss. There are a couple torn-up cardboard egg cartons. The top is covered by a layer of plastic window screen which is held down by a Petco steel mesh lid. The Petco lid is too course to hold first to third...

    Polyergus ants

8 eggs? Very cool indeed!! Now you need to start planning where to get new pupa for the work force. Those slaver "workers" ain't too good at actually doing any real work.

    Polyergus ants

Ah, see? We are all different. I like the dirt set-ups myself. But that's because I like watching them excavate and fill in tunnels over time.

    Polyergus ants

Your best bet is going to be to catch a freshly mated queen while she is running around on the surface of the ground. Then you can just scoop her up and place her in a tank full of dirt. Start looking now as some species start swarming in early spring while others start in early summer. Digging...
