    Yen Saw - (US)

Just recieved another package of mantids from Yen. Got some of his Yersiniops from his trip to Tucson. Got a great deal and just couldn't force myself to say "no". All arrived in perfect condition as they were packed for the trip like a pro. Thanks again Yen!! Mike

Mantis hunting in the wild west

While living in Tucson, I found S. limbata ooths on Mesquite limbs about 6' off the ground. I also found I. oritoria all over the brick walls of the frat house. The ooths were laid on the morter between the bricks. I never found any P. arizonae, Yersiniops sp, or L. minor ooths in 5 years of...

    Good Books and Articles

I did not know they had done a title change. Guess they lost both "Boring" and "Too Long"! While it does mainly deal with taxonomy, it does have the first few chapters that deal with generic anatomy, physiology, and behaviour. And it is easier on the brain the the first book! In fact, I took...

    Good Books and Articles

Sorry to say, most of my articles are on taxonomy. For the most part, mantis organs and systems are rather generic. They are very much like grasshoppers when seen on the inside. As such, I recommend you read something along the lines of: "The Insects, structure and function" By R.F. Chapman...

    Good Books and Articles

It might be helpful to know what type of info you are looking for. I have several articles from journels that I can scan and send to you if they are on topic. I bought my copy of The Praying Mantids used and still stunned that I got it for only $35!! You just need to check for the used copies...

    M. religiosa diapause/breeding 2009 season

I have one from Luke. It hatched a few weeks ago and the nymphs are molting to L3 now. Hatch out was a single burst with no stragglers. Nice mix of colors and all look to be quite happy! Afraid I only got the single ooth. But I will happily send you one to play with should I get more a few...

    Ootheca Thief

Hey PhilinYuma, I've found several S. limbata ooths in my yard. All are a "mid-tan" body with a light tan zipper. All were found on the stems of a tall flowering plant that has a tannish stem that is very close to the color of the ooths. The ooths I have seen females lay in captivity are very...

    What could be possibly wrong?

Hey Luke, Sorry to see the mis shaped ooth! I've not had that species, but have seen ooths like that from several other species. The deformed ooths were always produced by females who had NOT been mated yet. Is it possible that she had not been mated? Or maybe she mated but was not fertilized...

    Lars Einfeld

I just recieved a great looking Pseudovates peruviana ooth from Lars. Well packed and recieved in 6 days(!) from Germany. Cost was quite fair. I will update this when the ooth hatches. Check out his site for some great species! Welcome on www.MantisandDragons.com Thanks again Lars!!

    Line of mantis Deaths

Hey PhilinYuma, I get that same response from quite a few sellers on ebay! Seems New Mexico isn't in the US any more. I often wonder if we were given back to Mexico and I just had not heard yet. Maybe the other 49 states decided to sell us for a quick buck! The reason I had suggested...

TAMU Insect Collection open house - Saturday, January 10, 2009

Hey Yen, Very cool photos! Love that 6" monster mantid!! Guess it puts to an end the questions, eh? Let me know and I will try to get over for next years show! I have so many questions that can only be answered by looking at the critters up close.

Very nicely done Pim! Your English and voice/accent are no worse then mine. And English is my primary language!

    Line of mantis Deaths

You mentioned "jerking" motion of the head. Possibly a the results of pesticide exposure. Do they do fogging for mosquitoes in your area? The jerking movements are very common symptoms of permethrin-type pesticide exposure.

    peruvian unicorns in hobby?

Do you mean Pseudovates peruviana? I got some from mantisdeperu, but was unsuccessful at breeding them. My second attempt failed as the ooths did not hatch.

    ismart (Paul) - (US)

I just got 2 more boxes from Paul. The first contained a ton of LIVE nymphs. All well packed and well provisioned for the trip. The second box contained a load of DEAD mantids. But that is exactly what I asked for! I wanted several for my preserved collection. Again, they were well intered for...

    S. Limbata Ooth hatches!

Cool! Sounds like you've got your hands full. Keep a lookout for the mottled pinkish-tan ones. They are my favorite color morph! They remind me of the pinkish camo gear I had in the mid-'90s.

    Entomology

Hey shorty, The lab work was OK. I just worked for an odd researcher. And, like Chun, I prefer to do field work. Being stuck in a lab is just plain boring to me! I spent a great deal of my time building equipment for future experiments. In the field, I placed bait stations. I then went back...

    Entomology

Hey Chun, Go to Arizona! Bio-control, cultural control etc are big fields of research there. Plenty of openings for applied field work. And you could work on that PhD at the same time.

Anyone hatched a recently laid S. Limbata Ooth yet?

The best way to test the FFs is to toss a few in with the betta. If they get inhaled, you'll know. Just check back to make sure they are eaten. If the fish refuses them, remove the FFs before they die and sink. Speed of delivery depends on method of shipping and speed of seller. If you want...

    Entomology

Hey Shorty, There is nothing wrong with doing a couple years worth of community college work. I actually learned more from the classes I took at a community college then I did at the Univ of Arizona. The class sizes are MUUUUCH smaller and so the instructors actually care how you are doing. I...
