The Launch of Atlantis: The End of an Era

Well the reason I said it was too early is because the shuttles were designed to last for 100 missions each and most have only launched 30-some times. I totaly agree though that its a mistake to take them out of service and live us with NOTHING. Also I HATE the idea of going back to space...

    Substrate for Mantids

I use common everyday mulch wood chips like you find at your local hardwear store or garden center. They are cheap, (about $4 for a huge bag) they hold moisture, and they are naturaly mold resistant. They also give the enclosure a nice nature look and smell pretty darn good.

    Molting Gone Bad

If he can catch food on his own you really shouldnt worry. If he cant catch anything then you can try to give him wet cat food from some tweezers or a cotton swab and that should keep him alive long enough to reach the next molt which should correct the problem with his legs. The only problem is...

what to feed a praying mantis?

I rather enjoy feeding my chinese mantids nice fat cicadas. They put up a good fight and sound like crashing air planes as they are being eaten. They also dont have any body parts that can harm a mantis. If you have an adult chines it will likely eat most if not all of it even though its nearly...

what to feed a praying mantis?

It really depends on the size and kind of mantis. Ghost are small and like flying insects so most likely they will only take down a large moth at best but I have seen chinese mantids take on all kinds of animals. I myself have been tempted to try to feed a mouse to a large chinese female. I...

    Sphodromantis sp. Blue Flash Handling

So I was right. They are stubborn! :P I dont mind that they just hang out in one spot all day like ghost mantids but atleast ghosts will climb onto my hand. Oh well...either I will get used to them or they will get used to me, either way its always fun to have a new species.

The Launch of Atlantis: The End of an Era

I just watched the final space shuttle launch on NASA TV. Its sad that the shuttle program has to end so early when many of the shuttles have only seen about 1/3 of their designed life spans. Sadder still is the fact that 7,000 people are going to be out of work. Stupid politics!

    Hyperactive flower mantis

Sometimes I just will leave my enclosures open for a few hours. This lets the tank get some extra fresh air but also give my mantises the chance to climb out and stretch their legs a bit. Most of the time they just will perch at the top of the tank and just look around but still Im sure its nice...

    Feeding questions

Batting at food is one of the top signs they your mantis is ready to molt. I would go ahead and remove any feeders and give them a good misting of water. You shouldnt worry much about them starving. Mantids can go for about a week without eating.

Great Book on Insects & Spiders of North America

Book stores are buildings that sell these square things called "books". You can open these magical square "books" and find all kinds or words and sometimes even pictures inside! They were all the rage before Al Gore invented the internets. :P
