    Male or female?

wow thats a great camera! the picture is of a female. that last visible "segment" is not really a true segment i dont think, it will get covered up by the second to last visible segment (the one with the tiny little "notch" at the tip but no "spike") after a couple of moults. i have no idea why...

    MASA culture question

i dont know if the amount of yeast you used was to much but when i make ff cultures, this happens to them. if you wait around 24 hours after making the mixture before introducing the ff then it will be ok. by this time most of the gas will have escaped and the mix will have subsided. once the ff...

    Orchid female suddenly dies

im not saying its humidity or temperature that is wrong, but i thought its worth pointing out that even if the other mantids are seemingly fine, that doesnt rule out wrong conditions. often mantids will "seem fine" right up until they die. if the conditions become for example too hot or too...

    BIG ootheca!

none of my acromantis oothecae were as big as that either. they were all about 2cm, an inch maximum.

    parasitic hymenoptera?

does anyone know much about parasitic hymenoptera? i ask because i'm getting worried i might have some knocking about. ive heard of them sometimes hatching out of wild caught oothecae, but i never buy wild caught oothecae. i have about ten of these tiny black wasps in and around my g.ogngylodes...

    Housing a colony of Ghosts

i dont really know how much 10 gallons are in terms of size but i would say its not a dumb idea, p.paradoxa is often kept like this. i always keep mine together, i never have any cannibalism and they always find the food, i dont throw in any more than if they were on their own. i use flies and...

Arent Male Orchids suppose to be skittish?

maybe if you turn that frown upside down they may be happier to see you! :P ;)

Amazing idea for an amazing shelter

you should knock out one or two of the shelves to make a couple of larger containers, for maybe some p.paradoxa or g.gongylodes! if youre handy enough (and you sound like you are) to pull it off well then it sounds like a nice creative (not to mention money-saving) idea. ive thought about doing...

    Advice on Shipping Mantises

i agree this is too long, especially as you are shipping (i assume) tropidomantis hatchlings. i would bet alot of money on them all arriving dead.

    Unfertilized Ghost Ooth

exactly. like i said before it obviously wont wont guarantee your males safety, but it certainly reduces the risk.

    Tragedy

i'm surprised the acromantis didnt make it, those things are like cockroaches.

Girl has injury, will it affet her growth?

mantids with missing bits take longer to grow than normal ones.

    Female's food intake

if she had room for half a cricket and most of the male then she wasnt as well fed as she could have been. i agree a well fed female doesn't guarantee the male's safety but feeding until they "appear full" is not really enough.

How Many People in the US are Keeping H. coronatus?

i have never bred this species so wouldnt feel comfortable commenting on that but i'm sure if you do a search you will find your answer (or rather answers) ;) good luck!

How Many People in the US are Keeping H. coronatus?

if he is the same size as the female then thats not really ideal :( look how big the female has to get (not my photo):

    Female's food intake

the behaviour you describe might point to the female not being old enough, or not well fed enough.

How Many People in the US are Keeping H. coronatus?

theres been plenty of discussion about keeping and breeding orchids on this forum, if you do a search and have a good look you should be pretty set! :) though you'll probably end up reading contradictory advice so i guess its a case of who to believe! ;) anyway good luck. ps -...
