  1. Bathory

    Gongy communal

@Teamonger here he is when I got him and after his molt
  2. Bathory

    Gongy communal

@Teamonger All of them are at least presub now, so I'd guess it's around that stage! Once the wing buds appeared the antennae got thicker :)

    Gongy communal

@CosbyArt Thank you! I had 3 of them molt in one week so I wanna say they are doing good :)
  4. Bathory

    Gongy communal

@River Dane Thank you! And I am planning on breeding them (more like leave them in their enclosure and hope they get jiggy) if they all make it to adulthood, which shouldn't be a problem since they are doing so great :)

    Gongy communal

The smallest male was hiding, but here are the two other males (front) and one of my females (back). I thought the smallest male was a female but he molted into his antennae so here I am with 2 females and 3 males!

What are some interesting observations/behaviors you've come to learn about your pet mantids?

My first mantis who is an adult now, a Hierodula majuscula named Elizabeth Bathory, almost seems like she is used to me and trusts me in a weird kind of way. I had a Rhombodera who I got as a subadult, she was more skittish and it got way worse when she had a bad molting experience which ended...

    Thirsty

    @DefyTheNorms that's great to hear!

    Thirsty

Yeah she does look a bit smaller, although I never fully got an ID on Ripley so I'm not sure if she was basalis or valida. That abdomen movement is completely normal though so don't worry :)  They do get wing buds at presub so she may have two molts left!
  9. Bathory

    Thirsty

@DefyTheNorms here's Ripley about a day before her final molt!
  10. Bathory

    Thirsty

You sure she isn't subadult? I'll try to find a good pic of Ripley at sub and you can check it out. Both Ripley and Elizabeth Bathory were SUPER sluggish the days before their molts, dragging their abdomens when walking and all that jazz

    Thirsty

Do you have pics? On rainforest species you can sometimes see when a molt is coming because their abdominal segments are a bit "flared". When my girls were presub or sub and due for a molt they both tended to rest flat like you said and also very sluggish. When they molt they "pump" liquid...

    HELP!!!!!!!!

She should be fine, when my gongy molted she refused food for about four days before and one day after :)

    Pet store feeder woes

I just found a cricket on its back and I had one die yesterday. Guess who's gonna feed with just wax moths for a couple of days...

    Pics of Your Enclosure

Here are the current ones, in the bottom large exo terra there are three gongys, in the exo terra to the left is Elizabeth Bathory, the H. majuscula, middle is a desiccata, to the right is an adult female gongy!

    Pics of Your Enclosure

This is slightly old but in the exo terra I kept my Rhombodera, now my Hierodula majuscula (middle) lives there. The glass one one the right housed a jumping spider but she died so now there's a dead leaf in there :)  Below is my home made gongy enclosure, it's a lantern with the glass removed...

    Pet store feeder woes

@Mystymantis could they have been old? Crickets do tend to show when they are old/dying, with crumpled wings and dull colors. Worst case scenario is CPV, but supposedly they flip onto their backs and die. I'd quarantine the small ones for a while to see if they make it just to be sure. ...

    The day is nearing...

Do you have pictures? I haven't seen a deformed mantis make it to adulthood so most likely it's the result of a molt going slightly wrong, shouldn't be an issue :)
  19. Bathory

    Darkened and skinny back leg

@Velve thank you! I haven't had a mantis lose a leg yet so it's a first for me, had me a bit worried :)
  20. Bathory

    Darkened and skinny back leg

So one of the gongys I got today, a male, has a possible mismolted back leg. He uses it to walk and it does move but when he just hans upside down he tends to stick it out. I only noticed it now and I'm a bit worried about him having molting issues. Anyone experienced anything similar?
