    The "Pearl Crack" Experiment

I've got my mantis' in jars with branches from the tree outside, looks like a euchlyptis, but doesn't smell like one, and the babies started brown, but some turned green with age, and now the leaves are dead and mottled brown, and the mantis' are more brown than they were, so I think they do...

    Housing question...

Not really, I'm not into fakes. Pet's are what they are, and even if they don't like me, they are still just mantis', or fish, or whatever. After all, mantis' are just predators/killers. I consider the world one big enclosure with all of us being pets, we humans are usually just a bit more...

Why does the same female produce ooth of different colors?

ahhhhh, the mailmantis ;) I wonder what factors keep the ooth the 'other color' for longer or shorter periods, and all that technical like stuff. I think the technical term is 'mumbojumbo' ? Maybe 'chef' got ahold of your mantis...

What kind of mantis should I get?

figure this, if you get both kinds, and only one of each, will you be able to breed them, for ootheca's, or is that even in your plan... May be, if you want to breed, in your best interest to get a male and a female of a single type, or a pair of both types. I'd do some search function...

    Anyone here breed/sell earthworms/red wrigglers?

Thanks Orin. I read on the wormman site about the warm weather worms. I don't think they're as prolific, but I may have to get some for the spring. I wonder if they'll be too large for the mantis' to eat, if I run out of food, or want to try some for variety.

If I thought my ff's were drunk off the oj, yeast and honey culture, well... ;) I used to be in a homebrew club, in arkansas, and we had a contest and someone brought a honey mead from kansas city. I will tell you, I was impressed. It was so warming and smooth, but with a...

There's one for the mantis facts thread. Thanks

Do mantids molt more often during the day or night?

I really don't know, but wonder if temperature and food factors, as well as other stimulus like stress, have anything to do with it.

    Housing question...

Yup, I'm a hulluva guy, at least I think so ! that or I'm one helluva ugly girl, the bearded lady  My mantis' seem to like me though, or they're just faking it till they get big enough to eat my head... They better eat their wheaties :)

origination of the term 'ootheca' ?

I was reading a post, and thought that the term ootheca sounds strangely familiar, or similar to the term ooze, and was wondering where the term ootheca originated from, or if some hairlip guy was watching his mantis ooze, and told his friends the say the insect oothing... :) Just cuious...

Why does the same female produce ooth of different colors?

PH affects colors of things when nutrients lock up, witnessed by the leaves changing colors in fall, and they may be a contributing factor in your situation. Or, maybe your mantis was drinking grape soda before 'oothing' . B)

UPDATE- The cultures that have oj and extra yeast in them, that seemed to be not producing, are kicking some major a.., and there are maggots all over the side of the containers. The one's that I note that have the most sign if new life overall though, are the one's with honey and molasses in...

    Mite paper question?

I was searching the web for some pinhead crickets in phoenix, and found a store that sells it, but it's the same price as Rebecca's. You can search for that info, or get it from her, and maybe save on shipping if you get other supplies as well. Just a thought I think that place was called...

    FF transfer/feeding system

I usually have a few escapee's, and I figure the escapee mantis' will have them :) I take the t shirt square off the jars I use, then mist into the jar, and any mantis' close to the top of the container usually go into the jar when I spray the mist in, then I tap the ff's to the bottom of the...

Help! Eggs hatched and I'm in trouble!

Of all the Petco stores in Phoenix, I only found one on the west side that carries the fruitflies. I called and the guy that answered said "Yes, we have them", but when I got there the helper said "we don't carry fruitflies" to which I told him I was assured they did, and he checked and found...

    Fruitfliesinc.com

I read the post on culturing fruitflies, and the links to other posts on the subject, and my cultures have been doing fine. Even the one's that has some deaths have plenty of activity in them now, I think many of them got drunk and passed out, but are back to work B) I would think that in...

    Amazing mantid facts!!

Amazing fact: Manits' don't do housework. They are lousy at doing dishes, or taking out the trash, but they are entertaining to watch. Maybe someone will enhance this amazing fact, that I heard, but mantis' have a spike that they can punch prey with to injure them, then they snatch and eat...

    S. limbata 'flattening' themselves...

This is my first batch that I've had, for about 3 weeks now, but I've only seen them emulate sticks, but not flatten yet. They are getting where they make a run for it when I open the containers though.

    temperature and release (newbie question)

If you're keeping them in a 15 gallon tank they're probably having a more difficult time catching fruitflies, and may be starving enough to eat each other. I'd try to keep them in a smaller area, when you single them out, so they can catch the prey easier. I didn't have any problems with them...
