    Ghost mantis headache

welcome. try the search function, it is very useful (even if sometimes you have to sift through alot of threads you dont need, eventually you'll find one that helps you/youre looking for). the setup is for the most part completely up to you/personal taste pretty much. "peat on bottom of cage...

    What's the deal.?.?.

i'll give you lewisham and walthamstow but enfield?! well maybe youre thinking of the town part, but crews hill is WAY out of the way, basically countryside, full of retirees and the rich, and very little chance of getting shanked or shot ;) while waxworms are not good as a day-to-day...

    What's the deal.?.?.

i cant find grasshoppers on that site, and i have never seen them for sale as livefood, but if you do manage to get hold of them then i imagine they would be fine as feeder food, size permitting (the only grasshoppers i have seen have been in the fields, and they have been fairly small, around...

Maybe a little smarter than you think!

oh dear. this is my last post in this thread. i was not responding to that. if you go to my post, you can see i was responding to the sentence "Same as they are able to recognize a member of its own kind, and of the opposite sex, in order to reproduce and survive as a species." that is the...

Maybe a little smarter than you think!

the way i understand it, mantids recognize conspecifics and potential mates using a variety of stimulus, such as visual clues, pheromones etc. i don't know enough about biology/invertebrates/mantids to know exactly what all stimuli these are. however, i know this behaviour is not learnt. unless...

this is instinct, not cognition or intelligence.

    First enclosure opinions.

the original poster did not ask "what should i house my mantids in, what is the bare minimum i can get away with?". they asked about a specific idea they had, and the problems that may arise from this, therefore your post had close to zero relevance. yes, i house most of my mantids simply and...

    Embarrasing Mantis Question...

nature is not as black and white as this. caterpillars can be considered pests and vermin when they infest and destroy plants and crops, likewise flies (like bees) can also act as pollinators, not to mention the important role they play in genetics research (drosophila).

    First enclosure opinions.

this is not really a useful contribution.

    First enclosure opinions.

i can only really comment on the size, it sounds fine for pretty much all species excepting a few. for example it may be a bit too big for some smaller species, they may have trouble keeping well fed, but this is not such a big problem. also i dont think Idolomantis would do well in that size...

i dont think anybody will forget that thread ;) one of the classics... :P

A few questions on breeding ghosts

even if they ate as much as they could possibly eat every single day you were away, i still doubt they would be dead (from old age) when you got back, especially as they arent even all adult yet. you should stop worrying so much, keep them apart if they arent already, go have a nice and holiday...

    which mantid...?

Acromantis formosana! they are the feistiest mantis i have ever kept and will actively chase down food EVERY time, i have never known them to catch food by sitting and waiting. they have big appetites and are brave, tackling food close to their own size (and easily at least their own mass). they...

A few questions on breeding ghosts

search the forum, the breeding of this species has been discussed. in my opinion, i would do exactly what you were thinking of doing while on holiday, only when you get back. they will be older, more ready, and probably more well fed than if your mum was feeding. also you can keep an eye on them...

    Pseudocreobotra ocellata breeding diary

this does not mean copulation was successful. also, how much did you feed her prior to her laying this ootheca? because for a first fertile/laid ootheca, it is very much on the small side, and looks about the same as the duds my female used to lay before i mated her. anyway, this nobody can know...

Whats the biggest ooth your mantid has laid

heres another of yens, slightly longer: according to yens site, his record hatch for this species was 86 nymphs. i don't think feeding has "everything" to do with ootheca size. obviously there is some relation, however you can have a female that has been fed so much she refuses to eat...

Whats the biggest ooth your mantid has laid

haha that first quarter inch looks a bit generous! ;) :P what does everybody think influences oothecae size?

A few questions on breeding ghosts

    1. depends how close they are to adult. if they all moult within the next few days (or at least the other half of a couple) then you MAY be able to see some action before you leave. around two weeks as adult can be enough time, though some people would reccommend waiting longer to be on the safe...
