He was playing dead :P I have had P werneris, Deroplatys, and creos all do this. You probably spooked him when you came into the room. Then again, what is his health like? Could be sick but i don't really know the context. Also as for the grip, none of my D. lobatas were very good grippers...

I had a female Hierodula suffer the same way, she did lay two ooths but died prematurely. I would suggest helping it close up if it isn't on its own.
