Solifuge v ants (american soldier fun) *Language*

Saw this on a website, can't find the original link so i'm afraid you'll have to cope with a mirror... http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=18985 Thought it was interesting :)

    ooth removal

Ok, we've all been there- the mantis just laid an ooth onto your nice clean mesh at the top of the enclosure... only problem- it's her first and so you know there's a few more to come! How do you remove it?! - can't really leave it there because the crix climb to the top and will eat it I've...

    Ooth orientation

Perhaps coincidence but I thought it was worth a mention... I have two mantids in separate net cages adjacent to each other and one laid her ooth a week ago, the other last night... but they both laid it in exactly the same orientation. I just used a compass and they are aligned so that the ooth...

    Cloves, Cinnamon, and mantids.

I don't think this can really be confirmed through general observations in the literature... and i believe these spices have only been *tested* with pest insects. However, you could do a small experiment and set up a long enclosure with the spices in one end... If you find your mantis pushed up...

    When Would You

personally i'd get them up to a month before... then you can start culturing your own making sure you have enough! I'm not sure what ooth you have but average numbers range from 20-200 nymphs... so you'll need a number greater than that if you want them all to survive - one vial/ tub might have...

    "hairiest caterpillar"

by legs I guess i'm talking about the segmented sort... they have 3 pairs of normal legs, 5 pairs of pros and 1 anal proleg... but this looks like it has more sophisticated legs - possibly pro all the way along... so anyone have any idea?

    "hairiest caterpillar"

I was browsing one of my regular sites a few moments ago and I came across this: http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=18729 titles "the hairiest caterpillar" - now I'm pretty sure it's not a caterpillar as they don't have legs - they have 6 tiny versions at the front and prolegs -...

    P walhbergii mating

Some just take time... Same thing happened to me with my budwings... I waited 2 weeks or so, tried mating and nothing... Came back every 2 days and tried again and nothing... Then I gave up, threw them both in the same container together and left them over night... The next morning, I saw them...

i have an ooth, now what

Nope... but if it goes brown and hard or mouldy, you can pretty much guarantee you won't get much out of them... Depending on the temp, humidity, ventilation etc, the time will vary lots- and of course some over-winter. I'd recommend leaving a few more weeks- if you're really eager, then slice...

WHat do I feed the babies?

Depends how many you want to keep... micro crickets, fruit flies, aphids, greenfly, blackfly, micro waxworms (which you'll need to grow yourself) can all be used. If you want to keep as many as you can, put them into individual cups etc but expect quite a few deaths at first (hatchlings are...

    Best UK fruit fly supplier?

Personally, I think it's luck of the draw... I don't think there's any such thing as a bad supplier of FFs. The point is that If the medium is old, then you'll probably get some adults eventually so you can breed them yourself, or if the medium is fresh, sure there might not be any to use, but...

    gestation period

I mated a few of my budwings 2 weeks ago and they still haven't laid ooths!!! I thought it was meant to be a lot quicker than this... I'm feeding regularly and lots, given them water, lots of climbing places (net cage) and still nothing :(

House flies maggots found in fruit flies media

Hasn't happened to me... but you bring up an interesting point... Fruitfly medium I'm surprised at UNLESS it was made with a lot of yeast. Maybe the dying yeast produces the same sort of rotting smell that meat gives off - possibly attractive the houseflies... If anyone buys enough yeast to try...

    where to holiday in europe?
