    Hi from OC!

Hi Sarah! Kiwi is so darn cute! You can sometimes tell the gender by the abdomen segments underneath. 7+ segments is a male, 5-6 segments is a female. Females are more “plump” while males are usually skinner and smaller. Not sure what species Kiwi is, I’ll do some googling and send you a message...

    Is There An App?

While visiting the forum on your mobile device/phone, at the bottom of the drop-down menu on the left side there’s an option to download the app. The link doesn’t work, and I can’t find any related app in the App Store. Does anyone know anything about the app or if it still exists?

    Is this good enough

You can use paper towels at the bottom of your enclosure instead of substrate. The reason mesh is suggested for the top is a mantis needs a good surface to grip and hold onto while they’re molting. If you don’t provide them with the correct molting surface, you risk having them mismolt (falling...

    Bioactive 4x4x8 for ghost nymphs!

They’re beautiful, tell them “Jenna from Canada” says hi lol!!! I’d err on the side of caution and give them the extra space at the top.

    Is this good enough

The most important thing with any mantis that is not yet an adult is a good place to molt! I’d recommend adding mesh or tulle to the top to give them a safe and sturdy molting place. The sticks are good, just make sure they have 2-3x the length of their body between any obstacles such as the ground.

    Bioactive 4x4x8 for ghost nymphs!

Gorgeous setup!!!!! I would strongly recommend hot gluing mesh or tulle to the top of the enclosure for them to molt on like you mentioned above! If you will be keeping any mantids in there that aren’t adults, I’d suggest ensuring they have enough room to molt from the top. From the pics it...

what got you interested in keeping mantis?

I grew up on an acreage and my favourite hobby has always been catching bugs! I saw a photo of an orchid mantis about three-ish years ago and vowed to one day have a praying mantis. After years of searching, I took my mom to a bug & reptile expo for Mother’s Day (she likes that kind of stuff I...

    Molting Complications

Thank you for all of your advice and your well wishes to Mr Bug Man, sounds like he’s gonna be just fine. That is a fantastic suggestion! The home renovations begin tomorrow lol. I wanted to see what your opinion is. If I should make a change, or you know of something I didn’t mention please let...

    Hello

Congratulations on the molt! Would you be able to post a photo of the underside of the mantis? Typically males have more segments on their abdomen (8) than females (6), it’s easier tell from the underside of their abdomen.

    Molting Complications

OH COOL! That makes sense now, I couldn’t find any helpful anatomy comparisons on google. The molt was horrible. Poor guy now has 3 bent/warped rear legs, a bent antenna, and I don’t think his wings will ever work correctly. I was crying while watching him finish his molt, I was so heartbroken...

    Molting Complications

I came back to your posts as my guy is having a moment and you saved our butts with the eyeball/feeding suggestion. I was at work and came home to find him on the bottom of his enclosure mid molt, and now his abdomen looks like this. Since I’m insane and he couldn’t grip I taped his rear legs to...

mantis found in trouble - puzzling

Wow, they are STUNNING! Look at those wings! I would recommend avoiding crickets as they carry diseases that are deadly to a mantis. Blue bottle flies, roaches, and grasshoppers would be ideal. I have a few questions for you before I attempt to give any suggestions: Are their back legs...

    Hello

Welcome to the forum John! I found a 4.7”x4.7”x8” container on Amazon.ca, I’m sure if you’re in the USA you’ll be able to find a similar one on Amazon. It was the perfect enclosure while my Mantis was small, I now only use it for feeding him.

Why is my mantis vomiting dark grayish fluid?

I’m sorry to hear your Mantis isn’t feeling well! If you are able to share what you fed or are feeding them and how you care for them, it may assist members of the forum in helping you identify the issue/cause!

What is the best beginner species?

The first thing I would recommend is looking into which species are legal to keep as pets in your country! In Canada we are only allowed Chinese & European Mantids, and I’ve been looking for MONTHS for a European Mantis I can purchase online. The majority of well known sites online only ship to...
