Actually I think the bio lab did a good job to even include a preserved mantis. Many schools don't do that. And give credit to whoever that was able to identify it as a mantis and not phasmid, eventhough it was a wrong species. Be thankful and not resentful. Not everyone knows as much mantis as you Alex. As to reply your email, I will send you preserved specimen of Stagmomantis if that helps, providing the school is willing to accept my donation.

I thought a mantidforum would be a bit more interested to learn of a taxonomical mistake involving a great American mantis because at least we all understand the story

You identified a situation which, in your view, warranted additional research. You solved the anomaly and perhaps helped future budding entomologists. Yes - there may very well be a student in the future who has the healthy, focused curiosity you displayed (one can only pray there are one or two American students left with that attribute). What if Galileo, Newton or Edison listened to all the wise-crackers and nay-sayers? You made a discovery and properly corrected old data through accurate research. That's a core protocol in science.

I've been keeping mantises longer than I care to remember, and I still don't know most of the scientific names. Usually I have to pull up google to even come close to grabbing the proper spelling. On the other hand I can recount all of my pet mantises names.

Ignoring all the petty arguments...

Agent A, I work in the insect collection here at Cornell which has over 7 million insect specimens with somewhere near 200,000 different species. As extensive, well documented, and organized this collection is, it still has its faults and flaws (which gives me a job! ). Heck, earlier this semester I was in some drawers and noticed an obvious M. religiosa hatched ooth labeled as a T. sinensis ooth. I made a note and had it properly changed. Is it a life changing moment or a significant discovery? No, but a little can go a long way. And correcting even what some would consider a trivial mistake, is good deed. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean to start a thread with all caps that makes certain people like myself drawn to it, but to each his own. The point is, there are simple mistakes like this, even at an high academic institution, as mantis people we just have to correct them and keep moving on.

Um, I have read that there are over 2400 species of mantis (that is a whole lot to me). Do you know many of those mantids (the names and other stuff)?

You went to Orin with this? Why not the rest of the community. I know I've been gone for a while, but what on earth happened? Last I remember, Agent A was a pretty cool guy. Your public display of anger is unnecessary ant immature. Keep your feuds on the down low, for crying out loud! I'm a little surprised that you would act this way, having seen you around as well, in the past.

People do have fights... sure... some big names in the community have fought with me (or the other way around) but that does not make me explode on a thread having nothing to do with the personal matters.

I would love to fix these kind of things one day or at least be a part of it. I'm more of a beetle guy but I have seen some terrible identification mistakes before. It's sad but understandable. Not a lack of intelligence. People should hire local enthusiasts with a lot of invertebrate knowledge to put together collections or actual entomologists though. Just saying. It would help a lot .
