My pop has an iPhone6 which takes really good videos/photos. I'm amazed with how close it can get while remaining clear. It's impressive. It takes better photos and videos than any camera I've ever had could take, and also better photos than my Samsung Galaxy tablet 10.1 can take. I was able, for the first time, to get a pretty damn good video of one of the nymphs hatching.

Nice videos - amazing how they start life straight as a arrow and slowly unfold themselves. :)

That was awesome! such a struggle right from the start... getting the arms out, those antenna in its face...hanging by a string? where does that string come from? an umbilical? I know... I know... they all have it.. but it just got me thinking...eveyday ... a new question... a new wonder... and so ferocious afterwards... so hungry... it was like..."give that to me" its strength...moving that cup..but not letting go of the food... simply amazing! Thanks for sharing..

Hmm that is something to wonder isnt it? where the string comes from. It's so weird. It's attached to the ootheca, and the exoskeleton. It IS like an umbilical cord, lol!

Haha yeah, the little one was not letting that go! Its amazing how strong they are, it surprises me every time!

Gotta share! haha :)

Cuz we are the only people who understand... right? bugs cute??? What??? Birds of a feather...you know...

I think the string is silk. Spiders make it, of course silkworms make it and other caterpillars make it. Why not mantis nymphs?

Do you think they MAKE it themselves or that its more a part of the ootheca? hard to tell......

how come its so hard to find info on mantids?? i cant even find an internal diagram.

I've found a few things for you, including internal and external, diagrams of organs/wings/head/etc. Most of it is in insects in general; however, there are several that are mantis specific.

Below is a diagram of the internal anatomy - for external visit the insect morphology page, a anatomy diagram or another here, and if there is something else specific a Google image search can find it (such as the raptor foreleg).

I hope this helps. ;)

Aha, that photo you posted there is quite good enough, i know its not a mantid but im sure they work quite similarly, or at least it looks so. I dont so much need an external diagram, as ive been able to find that. Just never internal.. Hopefully someone will make one eventually. But for now this ones good enough! thank you!!
