fruit fly soup

this might seem like a strange question but have any of you ever fed first instar mantids by crushing up fruit flies with some water (making a kind of soup) and spraying this into the hatchlings container? i ask because i remember reading about someone doing this either on here but i cant find it. i am sure i didn't just make it up. so, does anyone remember this? thanks.
