Happy Christmas from California! I am a just-starting-out mantis fan. I've always been enthralled by large green (Chinese) preying mantises that were native to my family's ranch. My parents used to point them out to me as a child and we would sit and watch them in the garden for a long time, hoping some unfortunate edible bug would happen across the path. A morbid show for a child, perhaps, but it gave me an appreciation for such a predator.
I wasn't even aware that there was a hobby for mantis husbandry until I saw a Ghost mantis in a local shop. I couldn't tear my eyes off the internet for the next couple of days and I was delighted when I returned and he was still there. I find myself looking at him in his "home" and even though I'm an adult, there is a child-like sense of awe for a creature so lovely.
As for myself, I no longer live on the ranch but I do live in a relatively small community that is very close to the center of California. I am currently a continuation high school teacher. I toy with the idea of going down to the elementary level. Young children are so much more open minded than young adults! I have a variety of mammalian animals and in the past I have had several different species of reptiles and amphibians. This is my first real foray into the insect world.
I look forward to learning more about the wonderful varieties of this beautiful species and taking on the challenges of being successful with them. I greatly appreciate this forum and am happy to support such a place. I apologize in advance for testing the patience of any established hobbists with my newbie questions!
