I have not seen a post on this yet. Contact your state reps and voice your concerns. It may not have much effect on mantids however I know many of you keep exotic animals. This would stop the importation of all non U.S. animals and that even includes fish!

Please visit the website in my signature to contact your reps.

Yeah noticed that too... <_<
Have you contacted your rep? I am surprised at this board. I figured this would be important to many of our US members.

I will be soon. Between my five year old, this hobby, Xbox Live, customizing toys, working out, maintaining the house, and my real job, I don't find a lot of extra time. This however is something important and I would like to address.

Hmmm... I'm not really sure to say to them: "I have animals you would take if you knew about, and I don't want my hobby to be more "illegal"? Anyone want to share the gist of what they are saying for those of us less versed in writing letters to the government?

;)

Very good point!

If you feel that such a bill, although it would cause the entire exotic pet trade to close down, as well as depriving millions of folks of their pets, would protect the public from serious imminent danger and or protect ecosystems currently being threatened by exotic pets, then you should support it. But remember, the onus of proof is always on the lawmakers who introduce and support any bill.

Go to the Humane Society of the United States website and enter "HR 669." in the search pane. You will find a para saying that the bill "will save the suffering of millions of animals" and a form letter to send to your representative. There is no actual discussion of the provisions of and penalties demanded by the bill.

Go to http://www.arbreptiles.com/lastword/legislation.shtml for the opposing view. See if you agree with them. Follow some of their numerous links.

Then write:

"Dear Sir (or Madam): I write this to express my outrage at the provisions of and draconian penalties proposed by HR 669. Nowhere has there been presented adequate scientific evidence that such a bill would protect our environment from introduced species. Indeed, the majority of such malign introductions in the past have been due to accident, such as the zebra mussel in the Midwest or by incompetent ecological biologists, such as the mongoose in Hawaii. The Humane Society of the United States has openly stated, without any supporting evidence, that it intends to close down the exotic pet industry, because it causes the suffering of "millions of animals," though it is unable to contain the the cruelty regularly committed by owners of puppy mills throughout the US.

I was happy to vote for you in the last election, but frankly, neither I nor my friends will find ourselves able to support any congressman who would support or vote for such an outrageous bill.

Yours, etc.

Long live the Democratic Process!

Thanks for that response PhilinYuma, I just wasn't really sure how to approach the writing aspect, and yes I intend to research it fully, although I am already feeling pretty biased! <_<

If they take my friends away... there will be blood!

OK, yeah, excuse me for being crass, but @#$% this! I am printing out a ton of the fliers, and will begin distributing, first at Petco, then at all of the local mom and pop shops! They might not have the time to save themselves, I will help! Come on people! This will not only destroy our hobbies, but many people's financial stability! I don't know how much you breeders depend on your sales for income, but I'm sure you must be terrified... We can make a difference! Rise up brothers and sisters! Can we make this a sticky thread for all to see? Or broadcast this to all members? I wonder how many people here have seen this thread? I am livid.

"They" tend to do whatever they want... Ever major industry is extremely corrupted in the US, including the animal industries. This seems to be another attempt at gaining complete control over our daily lives... Slowly but surely...

Count your blessings, in China they are killing all domestic dogs over a certain size right now. :(

Revolution? Apathy is so much easier unfortunately...

Invasive species is a problem in some places like FL. That is bad. But for the government to do a blanket ban is just silly. The states need to be able to do what they need to do. I think we have other more important issues to worry about first.

Sent a letter and posted about it on my DA journal along with a link.

This is an insanely flawed bill. I can't believe it even made it past the first stage of ratification.

So far as I know, once a bill has been introduced, it is bound to progress to the level at which H.R. 669 now stands, committee hearing.

Here is the URL for that hearing: http://resourcescommittee.house.gov/index....w&extid=246

Some of the testimony, like that of the witness from Israel (someone must have offered him a free lunch!) is quite specious, some useful. AZ's own Laurence M. Riley, speaking for the govmint (F.& W Agencies) approved the need for greater risk assessment, but like other speakers e.g. the specialist on invasive species from Notre Dame, avoided the bill's more draconian measures:

"This kind of risk analysis is necessary in good government, and may provide for flexibilities not yet envisioned in HR 669 – a concept of ‘conditioned approval’."

Based on the evidence presented before the sub-committee hearing, it seems very likely to me that a greatly ammended version of H.R. 669 will be passed, but every creature "black listed" will be placed on that list by a risk management committee rather than by preordained fiat.

The entire testimony is available on videotape, and if you're really, really interested, you may wish to listen to it while you are working with yr herps fish or mantids. :D
