Hello people I have loved bugs since my early days of life. I recently got lonely in my room and decided to ask my parents if I could have some sort of pet I proposed geckos and chinchillas. The answer was a resounding no from my dad (house controller -_-) my mom was fine with it. So I then brought up the idea of a mantis. My first experience with one goes as this: I found a praying mantis in my woods when I was seven. And as I did with all bugs I tried to pick it up (as I had never encountered one before I had no experience in handling them) and...he/she bit me drawing blood! Ever since then I had a resounding respect for the creatures. Although my favorite "bug" as of my beginning in life is grasshoppers. Who knows maybe a praying mantis may change that. I WOULD LOVE SOME BEGINNER SUGGESTIONS THANK YOU!

Hello Lala and welcome to the forum

Sorry to hear your first experience ended that way. To be honest your only the second person I heard of who bled from a mantid bite, and one of a dozen or so who has been bit at all. Hopefully your next experience will be much better, and without bites, as I haven't been bit by one still.

Beginner suggestions are endless. ;) Are you referring to their care (varies on the species), building habitats/homes, what species to try, where to buy, or what exactly? In general though the forum itself is the best suggestion, and searches filled many of my beginner hours on here. If you have specific questions just ask though, and we can help.

I imagine though for beginner suggestions you are looking for something like the below (which I tend to get asked for from new members). :)

Where to buy

To start with you can buy mantids from the classified section (see the feedback section about the sellers too). Of course there are many great sites to buy mantids and related goods from online such as BugsInCyberspace, and MantisPlace, are the most common and recommended for mantids themselves.

Beginner mantis species

Ghosts (Phyllocrania paradoxa) are great and tame easily, and have a very exotic look but are a very hardy species - recommended for beginners too. Chinese mantids (Tenodera sinensis) are a great option as they are a naturalized species so can be captured in the wild - I can collect over a hundred locally in a few weeks here. The Chinese mantids also grow large at about 4", which means they also are hungry pigs. ;)

One of my favorites has to be Carolina mantids (Stagmomantis carolina) as they are a native species, and extra nymphs from a ooth can be released (again this is another species that can be found wild locally). They seem to have individual attitudes/traits, take to handling and various feeders well, etc. Likely though I have a soft spot for them as I got started in the hobby rescuing my first mantid from a winter freeze while at work. They do require a bit more care, but if you can mange humidity and feeding properly, I doubt you'll have problems with the species as it was my first.

Some great beginner mantid species though are Flower mantis (Creobroter sp.), Giant shield/hooded mantis (Rhombodera sp.), African mantis (Sphodromantis lineola), Budwing mantis (Parasphendale affinis or Parasphendale argrionina), Chinese mantis (Tenodera sinensis), Double shield mantids (Pnigomantis medioconstricta), Ghost mantis (Phyllocrania paradoxa), Giant Asian mantis (Hierodula membranacea), and Griffin mantis (Polyspilota griffinii). Although some are not necessary listed as typical beginner species, they are all hardy, and seem to do fine even with beginners.

Have fun searching and getting started. :D

By the way to anyone who is curious I ordered a Chinese praying mantis as my first mantis but as my second I think in the future I will order an Indian flower mantis. I ADORE them! Glad to see you already got a mantis coming - for the Chinese mantis (Tenodera sinensis) here is the care sheet.

The species has become a favorite of mine and I've hatched dozens of ooths (ootheca - egg sacs), and cared for a few hundred hundred adults (and many thousand nymphs). :D

They do best at 75F temperatures, but 70F or warmer is fine. They like 50-60% humidity, which means mist their habitat once per day (due to the winter heaters drying up the air otherwise every other day is good). Spray enough water that it evaporates in 30 minutes and your be in good shape. They take feeder prey quite readily and will eat flying or crawling prey just fine, just feed appropriate sized prey for the mantises size and feed them every other day. Feeders include Hydei fruit flies (for newly hatched nymphs), crickets, cockroaches, bottle flies, moths, waxworms, meal worms, etc. How much to feed, depends on them, feed them enough that their abdomen is plump but not ballooned. ;)

Peter has a great general care sheet/guide for mantids here.

Thank you!! I was just looking for a care sheet last night! I hope to have many more mantids to come and hopefully have a successful contribution to this forum! I'm also interested in millipedes and horned beetles but perhaps that's for another forum.

Yeah mantids are pretty amazing. I've been kinda bitten by two of my own, one broke the skin but no blood, the other chewed right thru my shirt and then got ahold of my finger and almost got me, but her raptors pinched me hard, haha. That didn't deter me though, I have multiple right now with plans of getting more! You'll be the same in no time, haha. Good luck! ?

Glad I'm not the only one!!! Haha I love insects in general and being has never detered me either!! I'm too much of a "bug" lover/enthusiast. I'll have to check out your posts!! Thanks for the reply!!

Heyas and welcome.  I remember being bitten by a very large mantis when I was in 5th grade. I was more surprised than hurt. But then I was trying to catch it at night with no net or jar, just my hands. LOL   I would have bitten me also.

Your welcome, glad to see it helped, and I responded about your other topic about the temperature (which is too cold). ;)

You can post those topics in the other sections such as Centipedes and Millipedes and Other Insects and Invertebrates - as many of us keep lots of various other "bugs" too. :D

Hahaha I almost never caught bugs without using my hands! (Unless it was safer for the bug if I used a net or container) It was all about the chase for me! lol I just was sitting there and saw him so what better idea than to just pick her up!? WRONG LOL I was very surprised as well considering I had only been bitten by one bug before: it was a katydid that first got me I also bled then. Who knows maybe I'm just an easy bleeder! Lol thanks for the welcome!
