Sometimes when my Idolo gets restless I let her out of the cage to roam. Tonight I scared her a little when I came into the room and she did her threat pose and rubbed her wings on her legs. The result was a really audible noise that sounded like a zipper!

This was the first mantis threat that actually scared me. Thought it was really cool, has anyone else had this happen?

I never experienced it, but there's a thread here or on the UK forum that explains it. I was hoping for it, but couldn't bring myself to stress them out. :-(

It would be great if someone could make a video of a noisy threat display. :D All of my mantids have been silent, and I have a hard time getting any to do a threat display at all.

this was taken a few years back when i bred Idolomantis. I was lucky this adult male was making the threat pose and sound.... sorry for the blurry image.

Yeah, for what it's worth, that's stridulation, in this case performed by rubbing the tegmen (forewing) against the hind leg. A lot of insects do it, most famously grasshoppers, crix and katydids, either as a courtship or a threat display.

I saw a video on youtube of a mantis doing a threat display and rubbing it's abdomen against its outstretched wings. It was pretty cool.
