Anyone know what species this orchid is? I just picked it up at Lowes a few years ago. Been very hardy ever since.

There is a member, RevWillie that is an expert in Orchids. He could tell you what species of Phaleanopsis it is. They do have bloom staying power if taken care of for sure. I have one that is more while throughout and when I had some Orchid mantids, they looked good hanging out on the flowers.

She has fake orchids in her container, but as far as I know(I bought her recently) this is the first time she's been on a real orchid. She really seems to like it.

Phaelinopsis. My spelling might be off but that is it. Its also known as the moth orchid. They are easy and they have nice colors and patterns.

A friend collects them.

Anyone know the type of orchid with grass like leaves, small flowers, and thick bulby stems? I have had one of those since 4th grade and its not doing so well and hasnt grown at all since i started it from a cutting

Cymbidium Orchids have leaves that resemble those of a lily. They cannot take freezings temps, but once in a while a dip to 35 degrees is not a killer. Perhaps Alex, this is what you have. They are all over outide in SoCal. Where you are I am not so sure.

Mime, the colors of your Orchid mantis do match the phalaenopsis orchid plant. The Orchids I grew used to thrive until I started to raise mantids. Now I don't give them the attention they deserve.

This is the easiest plant I've ever kept. I just put a few cubes of ice in it every 4 days. I've had to replant it once. That's it.

Well, I had over 40 of them a few years ago. They thrived in the bathroom with the extra humidity and light from a window. I kept them around the jacuzzi tub. The phalaenopsis is probably the easiest, but I raised others, too. Nowadays they just don't get watered when they need it. There is always a mantis that needs to be fed. I do have a couple that are blooming now, but I usually had around 20 - 25 that would bloom around Christmas and would last into the spring.

Most I've had at once is three. I had a producing vanilla orchid that got huge, but it eventually got taller than it could grow on my wall, it snapped at the bottom and died. Was sad.

She is beautiful! Did you just leave her "free-ranging"?

Because they have the ability to change colors between molts, is it possible that they could shift towards the colors of their surroundings more if they were left with them for a long period? I know nothing about mantids, and I haven't come across anything like that, so I'm guessing not...

Orchids and other houseplants were my surrogate last year and this fall in lieu of a pet until I got my mantis... I have 7 (mostly phals) and they're already starting to get a little neglected with my newest addition. :)
