Ha, first to death challenge on the forum, LOL just kidding folks, me and gripen have to much respect for that! But it would be cool...
+1 ... my idolos are total pansies. Of the species I keep I'd say for ferocity and sheer power it's a tossup between the H. majuscula and the P. medioconstricta. Majuscula wins because they attack prey so aggressively though.
I'm also with AgentA on the size issue... I can't count the number of times I caught something to feed mantises and tossed it into a Creo enclosure and then went.. oh man... that's too big. They never think so.

Well, you guy's just don't know what a adult gravid female idolo is capable of is all, I do... There raptors and will to eat would be plenty to make you change your mind on being a sissy!

That may be be, but it wasn't one of mine! Was it? They shred, grab and shred again, and take no guff, trust me, they're 4.75" and grab first, ask questions later, LOL ! Not my first time to witness it for the record, I'll Put my old Idolo female against any mantis, she needs the exercise, lol...

I'm talking MIA, real mantis on mantis, but a good first strike can go either way, all I'm saying is in my years of study with Idolo is that they're not as dumb and weak as people think, I know some will rip a phone book in half if given the chance, but then again if you raise them not to eat every day( I don't) ,maybe there more weak, not sure???

As long as water isn't involved I think this mantis might be a contender.
I'm guessing there isn't one species that would be the end all be all strongest as much as several species with females who could be contenders. It all depends on who spots who first, who is more hungry and so on.

Ok first off not even a mismolted mantis moves that clumsily and awkwardly and secondly if there was a mantis that big I bet it would be a creo and it would be freakin awesome!!!

Have you kept majuscula or desiccata? I've bred Idolos and the previous two, and the Idolo would get eaten 10/10 times
*both are 4" and built like bricks

Nope, never had those species, but if you say it then I believe it. I was just trying to make a point, alot of people think Idolo are just big sissy's but some adult females are very tough/aggressive and others are more gentle/wimpy, but either way I know there size is misleading overall and there far from the toughest mantis on the planet.

One of my shields got me good last night and drew blood. These shields are from Precarious and I believe they are valida? Very big, solid, and strong.

It's very interesting reading up on the strengths and size of various types of mantis.
I currently own a Cat eyed (M), Yunnan (M), Giant African, Dragon (F) and 2 x Dead Leafs (M + F).
I think seeing them in action and reading all of these threads has made one thing apparent to me. It's all down to the individual.
As with anything in life really. Each one has it's own personality, strengths and weaknesses. For me that's half the appeal of owning Mantis.
I don't think you'll ever own two Mantis of the same type who are exactly the same.
Some are larger but less aggressive, some are small and highly ferocious.
Whilst I'm glad you guys aren't serious about actually pitting your mantids against each other, it'd be down the prowess of the individual, not just it's type.

I've had some giants but the African was really scary. When she walked on my her arms dug into my skin like they were needles. She was really heavy too.
The Violin wasn't much smaller but she hardly weighed anything.
My Timor Shield was notorious. One night I was woken by a really loud banging noise. Eventually I realised she was smashing a Dubia roach against the side of her enclosure.
