Welcoming start to a new semester

Hi everyone, For winter break, I went to New Jersey to visit some relatives. But in the dumbest move ever, I forgot all of my ooths in my dorm. So for a whole month, I was wondering if my nymphs hatched and hoping that some of them would survive. Well, last night I come home, and check the...

    Oxy sorority fight.

 It's an old black and white, you don't see any of that stuff. But back to topic, I agree with separating when due to molt, just to avoid things like this. Either a mantis can cause another to fall or worse, eat it.

    Oxy sorority fight.

I'm sorry for your loss. But I can only imagine the horror of being eaten like that while you're in the other room playing piano. I just think of that movie "The Bad Seed" where the little girl goes into her room and plays piano while this guy is being burned alive.

    Parablepharis kuhlii

Yeah the mantis, just wondering. Thanks, where exactly are they from?

    Are they Japanese?

    Near christmas catastrophe

Glad everything is okay. Have a good christmas. And btw, you use the word "well" a lot in the beginning of your sentences.

    NEW SPECIES! Sphodropoda quinquedens

It was addressed towards you. Just an innocent question. I had assumed you had some contact who got them straight from the source, not captivity.

    NEW SPECIES! Sphodropoda quinquedens

How are these guys doing in the wild in Australia? I'm not interested in going and catching any, just curious about the wild populations of new captive species. Beautiful species btw!

    Critical damage from crickets?

I agree with what a couple of people said. I healthy chinese wouldn't be taken by 6 crickets like that. She was either dying before or some how got wounded and the crix took advantage of her. Nevertheless, too many crickets in the enclosure. And if you were gone for 4 days, don't worry about her...

    Cannibalism in the aggressive species

A lot of people keep nymphs together (especially T. sinensis) until they reach a manageable number, which usually happens in a couple of instars. Then they separate. But it's up to you and how much time you can spend caring for x amount of groups. I relatively lower species hatch rates (like M...

    Mantis Hunger Games

I like budwing or C. humeralis for district 2. Very aggressive. Everything else, kinda indifferent.

Has this hobby cost or made you money?

In high school I competed for 3 years in the Intel/ISEF regional science fair and won first place in the plant & animal category (1 grand for each time) but the last time I was able to go international and I won third place in the animal category, which was another grand.

Has this hobby cost or made you money?

Science fair winnings ($4,000) > the hundreds of dollars spent for food and stuff. But in terms of selling mantids only, definite loss.

Do stagmomantis ooths really need to diapause???

I did? I don't feel like going back and reading, but if I did say that, I'm misspoke. I don't know anything about females sensing winter coming. The females will lay as many ooths as possible until she starves to death, dies of old age, or the cold kills her. The approaching winter doesn't...

So this the one?!?! the 'elusive' Larger Florida mantis?

Biology of the bordered mantid, Stagmomantis limbata Hahn (Orthoptera, Mantidae). Annals of the Entomological Society of America,30(1), 96-109. If you can't access the article on your own, send me your email address and I'll send the pdf.

Do stagmomantis ooths really need to diapause???

That's a lot of assumption...and it brings a sort of nature vs nurture aspect to it. How did she adapt to living in your CT home, despite being naturally adapted to living in California? I think the argument isn't as complex as we're making it. There are observations of wild T. sinensis ooths...

    Metallyticus violaceus consolidated

Yeah she sure does. Great video! Really interesting species.

Do stagmomantis ooths really need to diapause???

I've never heard stagmomantis needs diapause. In fact, I figured they were in the same situation as most mantids in North America (T. sinensis, I. oratoria, Litaneutria, and maybe some more) in that the cold merely prevents them from hatching too early and dying off with no food. The cold's not...

    My mantis has a pet

Okay, I understand what you're saying. Still, I'd be hesitant with suggesting that the mantids know that they can waste food. To a mantis, everytime they hunt they have to "work" for it. Nevertheless, it's interesting behavior, I've never seen it before with a healthy mantis, wild caught or...

    My mantis has a pet

I'm sorry, but how do you know this? I've never seen this before nor have I read anything about this, and I'm not sure you can say "sometimes" captives still have this instinct. That implies that captives lose other instincts, which I don't know any mantis that loses an instinct. What I've seen...
