    Kin Selection And Fratricide

I think that many contributors to this somewhat confused thread are mistaking a small enclosure with a natural environment. Chinese mantids, whose ooths produce a large number of progeny, try to migrate almost as soon as the hatch and you will never find an ooth that has been hatched for several...

    What and Why?

Over the years, I have discovered that mantises make less poop than tigers. It also hurts less if they bite yr finger, and there is more variety in mantids; tigers are generally just stripey. Guess it's time to go back to bed.

I Don't want to sound stupid

I have no idea where to buy BBs in GB. Have you tried a Google search? Soon, though, you should be able to catch them outside. Bananas contain less than 1% protein by weight; they are mostly carbohydrate, like most fruits. So far as I know, British locusts and grasshoppers , unlike American...

    Unnecessary Evolution??

Oh dear, Y.A. you kicked another hornets nest! Good for you! It looks as though you already have a good handle on what is involved in natural selection. I am half way though an exciting discussion on why it is highly unlikely that the 1800 issue British shako was "cut down" for drummer boys, or...

    female chinese wings still ruffled...

It's quite true, Y.A., insects' wings do have veins and nerves and probably stuff, as well. But they develop as the newly exposed wing expands after eclosure: Since someone has told you otherwise, here is a nicely non-technical explanation of how the veins (and stuff) develop from the Wikipedia...

    Sphodromantis throwing up a lot..

Get crickets from the pet store and you might also want to order some more BB larvae or pupae. Vomiting and weight loss are no more likely to kill him of themselves than they are likely to kill us. Oh! yes, I know, I know!! Crickets are not dangerous to mantids unless they are too large/too...

    female chinese wings still ruffled...

A lot of folks clip wings that hamper yr mantid's movement. Clip only as much as you have to, of course. Why do you object to clipping, Agent A? The area is not enervated and it would seem that burdening the ,mantis with clay or paper clips might increase her problems.

    Addicted to vaseline

In an interesting thread, this has to be the most interesting comment of all, Y.A.. :cowboy: Actually, though, although many craft stores still employ special guard dogs in their copper wire isles, the big thing now is the illegal acquisition of mercury wire Just turn your head, and it's gone...

    Stung

Yuma is home to the Arizona bark scorpion, Centruroides exilicauda (I think that that is the current species name) which has the most virulent poison of any North American scorpion. The boss recorded how he, his wife and I caught some at night with UV lights in a sandy wash by U.S. 8 a few years...

Lets hear the music behind the username

And for those who loved the blue lady, here's the real thing, Yma Sumac, who had a range of over four octaves --hers is the only voice in this clip!. Her album Legend of the Sun Virgin, was one of the first that I bought as a teenager http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uD71Ks6DXeg&feature=related

The FIRST Praying Mantis in SPACE!!!

Sorry, Hartearem,; I didn't mean to offend you, I did read your info right through, and I asked if you were in HS (again!) because I never know, at that age if you have had a HS level intro to science. If your balloon enters the stratosphere, it will pass through a zone of -20C temp. and will...

O.K. Guys, I listened to all of yours; give this a try (she hits the high note right at the end:))!

The FIRST Praying Mantis in SPACE!!!

Well, son, you seem to have a very cool and helpful uncle! After that it goes down hill. Are you in high school this year? Here's what you do. Look up "atmosphere" or better yet, "stratosphere" on the internet. You will learn that, contrary to what we might expect, the temperature, which drops...

    Alternate to fruit flies?

There is an irony here, maybon. Two friends of mine in NSW used to obtain their fruit flies from the uni genetics lab when they were undergraduates. The notoriously nasty one in oz was the papaya fruit fly, Bactrocera papayae, that caused millions to eradicate a few years back. Here in Yuma...

    Update

Old timers who remember Superfreak will be happy to know that she did so well in her honours year that she is being considered by her director for a PhD scholarship on orthopteran genetics. She will know in a few months. meanwhile, she sent me a pic of her latest pet.

Is it easy to get crickets & cockroaches to breed?

I' recommend that, for a start, you breed cockroaches. Actually, it is much easier, given the right temp, to breed them than not! Google your particular species and you will find a lot of helpful advice. I would suggest that the smaller species are generally more useful for mantis food. Do...

    Here's Looking at you.

I hope that no one will think me presumptuous for posting this. It is intended as a one-post thread. I am doing it partly to keep myself honest and partly so that Sunny, as Sabra Clark , will one day do what everyone does sooner or later and Google her name and read it. Sunny and i have lived...

I think you're freaky and I like you a lot...

"Beastophilia" is another of those copulated up words that tries to marry Latin with Greek (miscegenation?) so instead of shifting the balance by using "semi" or "hemi", I'd suggest that nice Germanic word "half", so "halfbeastophilia" will serve for a three-way tie. I don't know what to tell...

I think you're freaky and I like you a lot...

A fondness for Capuchin monkeys, Henry is called "beastophilia" :D Quoting an unnamed dictionary at me is a little like my giving you potted definitions of popular music in order to "prove' a point. The fact remains, though, that though you ascribe "all the colors of the rainbow", to...
