    Canadian Fruit Flies

Flightless fruit flies are indeed crazy hard to find in canada. Your best bet to try to get some in the future so you can start you own colonies and never have to buy them ever again (this is what i did) is to check reptile shows/forums/fackbook groups for your area. Surely someone somewhere in...

What can I feed to a stick insect with limited options?

Sad sad news. I tried everything I had access to but unfortunately it was not enough and my stick passed away. If the pet store ever gets them in again I will try again in the spring when I can buy berry bushes :( The pet store was feeding them the exact same lettuce I tried (same store, same...

Breeding Soldier Flies, indoors with a lamp

Awesome you got that working! I tried various lights for months with no luck at all until I put them in a window.

    Humidity

I have a very similar set up but with a large ExoTerra where I place all my cups and containers. I have heat lamps and a humidifier set up so I can keep the inside of the ExoTerra controlled. All the containers within the ExoTerra are mesh so the humidity/heat is the same throughout.  In time...

What can I feed to a stick insect with limited options?

@Salmonsaladsandwich @CosbyArt Great idea! Its certainly worth a try. I am not finding any options and I am not convinced she is even eating the lettuce as I see her like mouth it but never see any of it actually gone/missing. I'll let you know how it goes. Now to find wheatgerm in...

What can I feed to a stick insect with limited options?

@CosbyArt Thank you so much, you are a fountain of information as always. Iceland is very difficult for an insect keeper let me tell you. Unless you are looking for species of moss or mushrooms it is unreasonably devoid of flora and fauna. As far as I know no wild bramble of any kind grows here...

    Your pets?

1 Giant Beagle (he´s a pure blood but I have never seen any beagle as big as his monstrous self) 2 House Cats, one decidedly fuzzier then the other 1 Giant Prickly Stick Insect (L-no idea at all) 17 Miomantis paykulli/Egyptian Pygmy (L-all over the place) 6 Ghost Mantises (L4) 7 Violin...

    Where to get deli containers

Check if there are any Wholesale Clubs in your area, I used to pick all mine up at the one in Halifax? Or check for like restaurant supply stores. Alternatively I think you can buy them at Bulk Barn for 25 cents each.... I think.

What can I feed to a stick insect with limited options?

So far as I can tell the two species the petstore currently carries are Giant Prickly Stick Insect (Extatosoma tiaratum) Vietnamese Stick Insect (Ramulus artemis) It is winter here so outside is not a viable source. I can't wait til spring! Then all my issues will be solved. I am not sure...

    Escaped Mantis Tips?

Right? Thankfully my loose flies were black solider flies which are WAY less noisy and generally less rage inducing then bottle flies for sure. I nearly lost my mind any time a bottle fly got loose but the BSFs were always just hanging out and I didn't mind. Still it might be worth a try, just...

    Escaped Mantis Tips?

I once lost one of my male Mios for 3 days before I found him happily munching a loose fly in the window where I almost vacuumed his tiny butt up. Perhaps loose a few flies? They will hang out on the windows for sure and the mantises might follow the delicious treats?

The struggles of having a mantis

lol! Try doing this in Iceland where even children don't really catch insects for fun. People have NO idea what in the world you are doing. I have had my fair share of awkward conversions with neighbors. The best hunting spot back in Canada was right near a school and I was constantly reminding...

What can I feed to a stick insect with limited options?

So I am looking to pick up a stick insect this week. I have done my reading and know the goto foods are oak leaves, rose leaves, berry bush leaves, and bramble leaves. However it is winter here in Iceland and some of those would be hard to find even in the summer here. I see that the pet store...

    Teamonger`s Mantises

Thank you for pointing that out! I was starting to get very confused about it too hehe. This was my 3rd try at hatching a ghost ooth so heck yeah! 3rd times the charm and all that!

    Teamonger`s Mantises

They are very interesting mantises to be sure. Bit harder to keep due to the high heat and humidity but its nothing a simple setup with a cheap heat lamp and humidifier can`t handle.

    Teamonger`s Mantises

OMG you are RIGHT! I am a silly silly girl. So I ordered a violin, ghost and flower ooth all at the same time. Having ordered a few ghost ooths previously that never hatched I was convinced that the darker of the two similar ooths had to be the ghost ooth and the lighter was the flower. Guess it...

    Teamonger`s Mantises

Life`s been hectic with my recent move so I have some catching up to do.  I currently have 3 species going and they are doing swimmingly despite a bit of panic on getting food for them all. First are the Violins who are quickly becoming a favorite species with their adorable continuous wiggle...
