"We're not having any more pet mantids..." Everyone, meet Lazarus

So with Thing 1 nearing her one-year anniv, we knew we'd be mantid-less soon. I was ok with that. Despite being fascinating pets, I no longer want to keep them as so. Thought it'd just be best to enjoy them in the wild and on the internet. I'm cleaning up our yard several weeks ago, getting...

Indonesian double shield mantis... slowest descent into death

Sorry for the weird title, but I did'nt know how else to broach this subject. I got two Indonesian double shield mantids from a seller on here a year ago (Nov 28). Thing 1, I kept, and Thing 2 went to my friend. Thing 2 passed this summer/fall. Never got full-sized and died from some sort of...

    Thing 1 - mis-molt? Wings aren't right

Thing 1, and Indonesian Double Shield Mantis, had his first molt with WINGS! I'd guess this is his 6th or 7th molt. He's never had wings before. I saw him all the way out (or close to it) of his skin before I went to bed. The next day, I saw him on the top of his cage (as usual), but his wings...

The cycle of life - it continues

We brought Barry Mantilow, a Carolina Mantis, indoors last fall after we saw her on our front porch. I'd never seen a mantis on our property in the 11 years we've lived there. She was an amazing pet. We learned a LOT about mantids in a short amount of time. Before too long, she laid several...

    Thing 1 - Glamour Shots

If anyone has a guess as to the sex, I'd love to hear what you think! :) Took some pics of Thing 1 tonight with my Canon DSLR. Hard to get the face in focus, but I've got a few winners!

Thing 1 and Thing 2 are doing well!

Older thread: The little guys (or gals) are doing great! Got them from GlassDoor November 28. They are Indonesian double shield mantids. They have each molted five times. Possible they molted once before I got them. They are around four months old. One's slightly larger than the other and I...

Bruce the Chinese mantis...nearing the end of her life

We brought in Bruce from the outside around two months ago. She's a female Chinese mantis and our 2nd we've kept as a pet. We didn't know she was female until she laid her first ooth. A couple of weeks ago, I noticed her slowing down. And then a week or so ago, I had her out on the pencil plant...

    Bruce, my female Chinese mantis

Bruce, enjoying some rays.  :D  She's laid two ooths and is missing part of one leg. I thought we were going to lose her last week, but she's still kickin'!

Thing 1 and Thing 2 - Double Shield Mantids - Pnigomantis medioconstricta

I swore I wasn't going to name them until I knew the sex. Every time I end up naming something with a male name, it ends up being a female. So, for now, here's Thing 1 and Thing 2, my double shield mantids I got from DeShawn! I don't know what instar they are, but they are about the size of a dime.

What do I do if my pupae aren't hatching?

I have a couple of nymphs. I put 3-4 fly pupae in each of their containers, but the pupae still haven't hatched. It's been about 48 hours now and I'm worried 'cause they haven't eaten anything in a few days. Advice?

Welcome home, mantis 1 and mantis 2

I got my package from DeShawn today of two (thanks for the freebie!) double shield mantids. They are so teeny and so cute! And fast! And kinda jumpy. I've already almost lost one and dumped the entire container of fly pupae in the process. Thank goodness for hardwood floors.  These are my first...

My next mantis - shipping in winter?

I just lost my first mantis, Barry Mantilow. We had her for two months and she laid five ooths. I'm sadder than I thought I'd be after losing her yesterday. I'd love to get another one, problem is it's winter in Iowa and I don't even know if anyone ships in winter. Since I have five of her...

    Barry Mantilow - still kickin'!

Our Carolina mantis, Barry Mantilow, has now laid FIVE ooths (oothecas?). She seems to be doing really well. She even has her own plant in her cage now. :) I take her out every now and again and let her "free range" in my bedroom, She's been so cool to have and learn about. I will be so sad...

Chinese Mantis falling off stick/side of cage

We have another mantis named Bruce, a Chinese mantis. Turns out Bruce is a female, as she laid and ootheca last week. Who knew?  I was watching her tonight and she keeps trying to climb up the corner of the smooth plastic critter keeper we have her in. She has sticks, but for some reason, keeps...

    Hello from Iowa!

Hello, all! I've lived in Iowa my whole life and have only ever seen two mantids. Until this year. SO came home several weeks ago and saw a praying mantis on our doormat. He took her and put her in a nearby bush. We came and went a few times that night and decided to take her in. My BF from out...
