When should I feed my mantis?

Do you order BBF's or culture them yourself like fruit flies?

When should I feed my mantis?

As a rule of thumb, I always fed my mantis when I saw his abdomen was getting thin. However, that was before reaching adulthood. Since he's gotten wings, I can't see his abdomen and I can't tell if he needs to eat. Anyone have any tips for a novice mantis keeper? My mantis is a male Hierodula...

    Are Superworms a reliable staple?

Oh no I give my mantis the worms alive and whole. I just see to it that he eats the worms head safely before putting letting him go about his business. I don't want Mr. Miyagi getting soft on me so I let him do his thing😎

HOW'S THE WEATHER WHERE YOU ARE?

In Southern Louisiana, we typically don't really have a winter. It's just a slightly cooler Autumn. It's 70F right now and it'll probably be around 65F for Christmas. Last year was literally my first time touching real snow and I'm 19😅.

    Water dish in enclosure?

@hysteresis Oh wow that's a lot of information I've never even thought about before. I've only just raised my first mantis to adulthood last week though😅. The additional temperature and humidity requirements are the reason I am hesitant to take on a more challenging species right now!😩

    Are Superworms a reliable staple?

Since my male Hierodula Venosa reached adulthood, I've found that fruit flies are no longer filling enough to keep around so I have started feeding him whole superworms. Although I do let him stalk and catch the worm himself, I make sure it's debilitated before putting Mr. Miyagi back in his...

    Water dish in enclosure?

From what I've heard so far, misting is the best method for mantises because it provides a reasonable amount of water to drink, humidifies their enclosure, and moisturizes mantis' bodies which makes it easier to slip out of their old skin during molts.

    Hello from New Orleans

Thanks! I literally feel like I just finished raising my first child this week😢.He was barely bigger than my finger nail when I got him and now he's almost the size of my hand.

    How important is experience?

I thought about ghosts, but I think I'm more drawn to larger species because I really enjoy showing my mantis off to everyone who comes over. Orchid mantises would be pretty neat to show off that pink color though too i suppose😅. Are there any other large, hardy, novice species? (preferably...

    Hello from New Orleans

Sorry to here that about hope. I hope (no pun intended) she can shake back with her next molt! I literally had to lift Miyagi up off of the ground by the branch he was hanging on and hold him up until he slipped out of his old skin. It's a miracle he's still alive and well with his wings in tact!🙏

    How important is experience?

My very first and only mantis, a male hierodula venosa, just reached adulthood this week so I'm pretty much still a novice mantis keeper at this point. However, I'm looking to start raising more mantises ASAP because I really enjoyed raising Mr. Miyagi (my hierodula venosa). So my question is do...

    Hello from New Orleans

Thanks for the welcome Synapze. And yea it's kind of wierd seeing Mr. Miyagi (my hierodula venosa) with wings. I just hope he'll be able to fly without any trouble because I had to help him molt by holding him up for an hour and a half because he molted from a branch in his enclosure that was...
