    pheromone trap

Actually I used this method to collect males when I had an adult female grisea. Just place the female outside in a mesh container and wait. I don't know about making a trap, but you can always do as suggested by Chris, its what I did. If you are in a wooded area, or close to one I would just...

Florida bark mantis and Florida ant mantis

I think your on to something with your mention of them living in the tops of trees. The time that I found the most in the shortest period of searching was when I looked in a lot with freshly downed pine trees. I caught 7 in about twenty minutes that day, ended up keeping just one male and one...

Florida bark mantis and Florida ant mantis

My male was wild caught at sub adult but I kept temperatures lower. Room temp was about 70-75 farenheight(I know the spelling is off but I don't feel like looking it up) with a heat lamp above the cage, but the lamp wasn't making a significant temp difference, and was always off at night. I do...

Florida bark mantis and Florida ant mantis

It's odd that your males die so quickly, what are the temps and such you are keeping them at. I've had several male grisea and all of them that reached adulthood(mine usually died as nymphs during mismolts) lived for at least two months. And my female lived six months as adult. I also haven't...

    flooring my tank

Actually Rick, several of my mantids consistently molt from whatever substrate I use, which is usually twigs. My pretiosa does every time and my flower mantids did too. At the moment my giant asians molt from the top of the container, as do my tenodera, but other than that, generally my mantids...

    flooring my tank

The substrate is mainly to provide a surface to molt for the mantids. Once they are adult it is no longer neccessary and is a waste anyway as most of my mantids spend most of their time on the top of whatever container I have them in.

what is the actual size when you say L1 or L5

Actually that refers to the age. L1 meaning just hatched, L2 has molted once, L3 twice, and so on. The size will vary with the species. Kirk

Raising Mantids from Georgia, United States

Welcome, I have family in Oxford. I've found all sorts of chinese and carolina mantids up there. My dad owns a tree business so I have access to the mantids in the tops of the trees during the summer. Actually, thats what caused me to get into the hobby.

Good news! Got a wild adult Grisea!

I never had that problem, mine ate voraciously and one day I just noticed an ooth in the cage. I really don't know what to say, you are getting her to eat though right? Just handfeeding?

my giant asians are free to go in my bedroom. good or bad?

I've had plenty of male grass mantids fly from me, one carolina mantid, a PW, and a couple grisea. Actually I actually caught a grass mantid once because it flew right past me, I just had to take a couple steps and catch it mid flight.

    Color changing mantis?

Thanks for the info Yen. By the way, the purple color is awesome, I didn't even know a variation like that was possible.

    HELLO FROM TEXAS

Well welcome to the forums. You managed to get all those species without ever going online!? You have a good contact.

    Color changing mantis?

Thanks for the pics, Macro, but again these show color change between molts, black at L2, lighter at later molts. But I'm saying my mantis changed color after the final molt multiple times. I'll try and get some pics.

    Color changing mantis?

I know that the species can have color variations for things such as that, but before now the only thing I've seen is changes in color from molt to molt, not post molt.

    Acerbity

I trades some of my Hierodulas for Tenodera. Great communication and flexible schedule(met to trade instead of shipping). All were healthy, only losses were those I kept together. Thanks

Good news! Got a wild adult Grisea!

It should warm up to ya pretty quick, I never had any problem feeding mine. If you get ooths from this one definately let me know when they hatch. Lately I haven't had a lot of time to go out and search for myself and this is my favorite species.(also first I ever bred) I like the coloration on...

Selcective breeding: possible? ideal species and traits

You can of course selectively breed for any trait that is genetic. Size and colore most definately, but I'm not sure how much temperment has to do with genetics. Just give it a shot and see if it turns out. It will definately take time, at least years, possibly decades. If your really serious...

    Color changing mantis?

My adult PW has gone through at least three different minor color changes since it's final molt. The color on it's wings surrounding the #9 and along it's back has gone from brown to green, back to brown, and is now sitting at green again. Anyone had this before?

    world's largest praying mantis

I'm not saying you did, I was just saying that I think that is where the comment came from as that is as close as I can find to what was claimed you said.
