Yes. For adults I don't use any. If you have nymphs it is a good idea to have a substrate to hold in a little humidity to help with molting. Only way around this I could see is if your room is very humid. Or you could just use damp paper towels like many people.

 
I like to use the spagnum moss for the containers, it helps with three things, 1 it gives the babies a place to sit if it is crowded in the container, two it holds moisture and most important, it keeps the container smelling fresH! ;)

This is also my primary substrate.

 
But there is no spagnum moss in my place ( I live in the Philippines)
