All mantis species illegal (Canada)?

Of course rick. Though the fact of the matter remains. Why sell egyptians and no others?

I'm going to have to " bug " them about this one for sure , it just doesn't make sense.

Maybe because that is what they are able to acquire? Maybe because they can get them cheap and are able to sell them easily? COuld be one of a million reasons. Instead of asking them, why not find the actual law or regulation in writing? I wouldn't know the first place to look when dealing with Canada.

 
What i don't get is why would mio's not be considered non invasive in BC? Maybe i'm missing some thing here? I thought mio's don't over winter? There ooths would not survive a Canadian winter. I would think they are just as exotic to BC as an orchid mantis would be. Are you sure you are not getting the mio's confused with the european mantis? I know that Mantis religiosa has taken a foothold in Canada already.

nope. I have been very clear. Just the egyptian mio's have been in stock.

I wish I knew where to look for the written law about it , I tried some sites but no luck ... :(

hey bro, I'm from vancouver also. Pet store owners here don't know anything. Which petstores have you been to?

 
Your laws seem just as vague as those here in the US concerning mantids. After doing some digging, I can say that miomantis is not a lone exception here. No where does it say that one particular species is exempt. There isn't a lot of info on mantids here, but I did find some good info. While mantids don't appear to be a big concern, I still say the shop owner is wrong. It may be ok but it may not be to keep mantids. Finding the rigiht info is just as hard as it is here in the US. My advice is the same I give to mantis keepers here in the US: find out what you can about keeping them legally and do so at your own risk. More than likely a normal hobbyist has nothing to worry about.

Pests Regulated by Canada. I don't see a single mantis on this list.

Lol. I actually enjoyed searching those sites hoping to find something good. Very similar to our Aphis website in that mantis info is few and far between.

Hey thanks rick! Also I've been to petland aquariums west and this online one from vancouver.

( I'm pretty angry. Just recently the ONLY supplier of around thirty species of mantids had to shut down his buisness)

I picked the wrong time to start collecting :(

If you are talking about Alex Pannassov, he stopped keeping mantis few years ago. And if you have been to his site before, you have probably seen what he wrote on the first paragraph (See HERE) where keeping Chinese mantis is OK but not other exotic species. He didn't mention about European mantis but you know it now from Rick.

Carol from Victoria BC Bug Zoo is putting her insect zoo for sale recently, maybe there is a chance that you could own it legally!

Thank you all for shining some light on this topic...! It is much appreciated... I did a bit of digging myself, and so far this is what I have come across for our Canadian Importation Laws... Although Mantids are a bit of a "grey" area it seems... Any thoughts???
