I noticed a little while ago that the eyes of my Chinese Mantis looks odd. For some reason one looked a foggy clear tan color while the other one was black. Could it just have been the lighting...or could something be wrong with its eye? I took it out of its container and moved around the room and even went outside and saw a LITTLE change in color but not much. Any thoughts?

Mine always got foggy eyes as a sign of old age.

I figure it's because mantids live longer in captivity than they would in the wild, where predators and weather tend to take them out before they get old.

In captivity they keep on until they start to die in chunks; a leg will turn black and become immobile, their wings will show some shredding on the back end, an antennae may fall off and residues may appear at the abdomen tip. One of the first signs of aging, in my experience, has been cloudy eyes. One or two signs of aging doesn't mean death is imminent, but they gradually increase week by week. The aging signs are alway asymmetrical and random.

How old is yours? If it's been an adult for over a month, I'd say this is an easy bet to be the culprit. Otherwise I have no idea.

Mine is a few weeks old and my male showed a pitch black eye and a green cloudy eye so hope its not old age or anything cause I have not bred him yet and my chinese female I just got has not molted to a adult so I dont want him to kick the bucket just yet!
