To state the obvious: I've just joined this forum because I am interested in keeping mantids!

I am from Australia and have been keeping invertebrates for many years now. I've had several species of scorpions and tarantulas, but my favourite pets (so far) have been phasmids. I've been very successful with breeding, raising and selling these.

I was a member of the Australian Invertebrate Forum, and found it very helpful and enjoyable as a community of hobbyists. I have a feeling that this forum will be similarly useful and fun :D

I have to admit, though, I have never had good luck with keeping mantids! When I was younger, I kept a mantis that found its way into my house, but it somehow escaped from its enclosure, and, I believe, was eaten by my cat (actually, the cat probably aided its escape from the enclosure, now that I think about it). And I tried keeping some baby boxing bark mantids that I received from a forum member... but they were so tiny, I was ill-equipped to deal with them.

Anyway, I am in the US now (Pittsburgh, but soon to move to Columbus) and I've decided that now is the time to give mantids another go, because I really do love them. So, I've just ordered some little budwing mantids from bugsincyberspace, and am very excited to receive them! Once I get the hang of looking after these, then, I figured I can start expanding the collection again haha

Hello and welcome to the forum

Budwings are a great species, and are real camera hams - loving their photos to be taken. They are easy to tame and refuse to go back into their habitats, as most prefer to be handled.

When you are looking to expand your mantid collection there are lots of beginner species, as they have little/no molting issues and are strong and hardy. You can look at the dedicated caresheets on the forum, or the information listed on the sellers pages. Some of the most recommended sites to buy from the classifieds here on the forum, BugsInCyberspace, MantisPets, and MantisPlace.
