In remembrance of my dear, sweet Kyle, whose life was cut short by a vicious cat attack, here are some of my favorite photos. Please excuse the bad quality, as my camera isn't very good!

Here he is all sweet an innocent at L1.

Now you can see him munching on a melanogaster at L2.

He turned so green at L4!

He had a little bit of a mismolt and ended up with a gimp leg at L5.

And here he is, the day before his demise. He never felt threatened by me before! He must have grown up when he molted to sub-adult.

Poor little Kyle. He was my big baby! He will be missed.

Cute little guy :) cats do love mantis also, but for a different reasons

My cat Tigger got a hold of 2 of my male Chinese a while back and played with them to death, no chewing more crushed up than anything.

I was so mad but I got over it. I still love her, she's my baby.

Kyle looked sweet. :) Perhaps there will be many more, Chinese are a challenge to raise but they are worth it. They gave me so much trouble in the first instars, and then there was an illness at subadult. I still plan on getting an ooth in the spring. I just lost my last Chinese from old age, so this post hit a little close to home for me. :( I don't have a cat, but there is always a little girl who loves to get mantids out for handling without permission. <_< Lucky for us she hasn't caused any deaths, and when any of the mantids seem ready for a molt, I lock the room up. My kid is fast and loud most of the time, but gentle with small creatures.

@AngelofDeath: Thanks! He was a sweetie; always wanted to come out to play. I know how you feel, though. I was so angry with my cats when they broke into Kyle's enclosure. But I couldn't stay mad for very long. I love my kitties and they were just doing what is normal for cats.

@LikeBugs: I'm sorry to hear about you Chinese passing away. My first mantis was a wild caught female Chinese, and she died at the end of November after laying her ooth. I hope to find her babies in the spring out in my backyard.

Yeah, I really miss him. He was by far one of my favorites. (Don't tell the rest of my mantids I said that!) He was always so adventurous and curious. I loved him.

Hey mantids! Guess what Deby just said about you guys? She said "Kyle was by far one of her favorites". I was gonna extort you for money, but I thought this would be better out in the open. It's better to get it out than keep it inside. That's mantid pyschology for ya. :p
