Sounds great doesn't it?

Hey everyone, this event is still nearly a year out, but we wanted to make the

announcement as soon as possible to allow people plenty of time to plan:

Tree Walkers International is proud to present Microcosm, a celebration of

life under glass. Microcosm is a new kind of event, the purpose of which is

to bring enthusiasts together through the common bond of nurturing life within

glass enclosures, from aquaria to vivaria, greenhouses and Wardian cases.

The theme of Microcosm is conservation. Just as species combine to form

healthy, functioning ecosystems, Microcosm seeks to form a coalition of

partners who apply their skills in cooperation to safeguard the planet's

biodiversity.

Microcosm will take place September 3-4, 2010 in Lynnwood, WA (just a few

minutes north of Seattle). It will be a two-day event featuring field trips,

lectures, workshops, vendor sale and a fundraising auction. All proceeds will

benefit Tree Walkers International to support amphibian conservation efforts.

For more information about the event, visit the Microcosm website at:

www.microcosm.treewalkers.org

More details will be added to the website in the coming weeks, so check back

often to see how things are coming together, order tickets to reserve your

spot at the conference, sign up to volunteer at the show, or register to be a

vendor. Things you can expect to see available at the show include:

amphibians, geckos, orchids, bromeliads, carnivorous plants, tropical plants,

aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, literature and natural history related

items, custom terrariums and Wardian cases, and more.

This wont be your typical "insert hobby here" show organized and run by those with only their interests in mind. This is YOUR show, a chance to broaden your hobby and be enlightened about others. We're really hoping everyone will be excited about this and really spread the word and get involved with making the show a gigantic hit!

We hope to see you there!

Sounds cool. Way too far for me though.

Not too far at all really, I just checked tonight and from DC to Seattle its under $300 round trip

What's the background and topics for your speakers? Just two for the event?

Both current speakers are herp related with backgrounds in endangered and threatened amphibians. I'm not sure what their talks will include at this time but I'm guessing they will revolve around chitrid, population management and amphibian ark.

Obviously these wont be the only speakers, we're currently lining up more from various interest groups. Joe and John were just the first to RSVP since Treewalkers is well known in amphibian circles. Would you like to recommend someone we should get in touch with? In order to branch out and make this show truly encompass every interest we need the involvement of all the separate hobbies.

Of course a speaker or two on invertebrates would be nice.

There's always that McMonigle guy. He edits Invertebrates Mahazine that several well known members of this forum have contributed to, has published a number of monographs on arthropods under the Eletra and Antenna imprint, covering such critters as roaches, mantids (of course) phasmids, and true bugs and has contibuted to such diverse invert publications as Insecta and Reptile and Amphibian Hobbyist. He speaks at a variety of venues and presented at the ATSC this past July, where he lectured on millipedes and cockroaches. I do not have an Email addy for him, but he can be contacted through Peter, the owner of this forum.

Here's a little more information on the currently scheduled speakers.

Joe will be talking about amphibians and the amphibian crisis, etc...but he/we won’t know the specific topic as he wants to wait until it’s closer to keep things relevant and current.

John isn’t an amphibian guy, per se, but specializes in museum curating and collections management. We brought him in to speak about the idea of collecting, why we keep what we do, etc…so it will have a much broader interest level for non-amphibian folks.

These two are for the Friday night keynote speaker event…and then we’re looking for speakers to fill the various lecture/workshop slots that will take place throughout the day on Saturday during the vendor show. This is where it would be nice to have people speaking from other interests and hobbies.
