Hi All,

i have a small garage which ive been getting ready to keep mantids (plus fish, amphibians etc) in. Ive insulated the walls and roof as best i can and have a sturdy kitchen-style worktop around 3 quarters of the outside with extra shelves and so on. Now i would like to use several heaters to main a good temperature for most creatures (and then just add heat mats for anything needing higher temps). What type of heaters should i use for this purpose and have any of you guys had good/bad results with this method, plus is this an expensive method? (the room is roughly 8x20 feet).

any advice is much appreciated.

cheers

At times I use a small electric space heater. Not sure about a room that size.
+1

I use a Vornado electric room/space heater that does great... but my bug room is a small bedroom within the house, so it also gets heat from the furnace.

Maybe you could use a salamander to get the room up to temp, then use a space/room heater to keep it there. I really don't know. I guess you'd just have to try it. I'd look on the box for amount of btu's or whatever they use to measure the heat output, and get a good one with lots. Sorry, I'm at a loss for other suggestions. Good luck with whatever you decide.

just know that multiple space heaters will have a 90% chance of blowing your breakers constantly. Anything with heating coils use a tremendous amounts of amps and almost all house hold breakers are only 15 amps, I would guess 15-20 heat lamps or 1-3 salamanders would work 10x's better with better electricity efficiency.

Room Heaters = 7-10 amps

Heat Lamp = .5-2 amps

Well Have you thoght about any of these? zoo, and hottels use heater like these, but you have to run the wire or have someone do it for you so you need to think about what kind of heater you need or want, I found these @ NexTag under garage heaters.

There are oil filled portable heaters that work pretty well. They look like small radiator heaters on wheels and are usually more energy efficient that forced air space heaters. I used to have one to heat a room that was attached to a shop building and it worked really well.

yup thats what i use for extra heat i cant use the ones with the coils because i have a parrot in one room and a sugar glider in the other and the teflon fumes those give off will be like instant death for either of those 2 critters

That is a good sized room. If you have it well insulated one of the larger space heaters may work but you might have to run it often. Keep in mind it will also make the room very dry, so you may need to mist often.

well there is always too put in a furnace that blows out heat to warm the entire garage built into the wall if you can afford to install one!
