So I got rid of the paper towel substrate and put some of my geckos sand in it.

What's the best way to retain humidity in a sand enclosure? Still just mist it? Will the water effect the sand badly?

Water can make the sand clump, or dry into a hard single thing. None of this is especially bad.

But the sand will not hold moisture very well.

You could put a small clump of orchid moss in a corner & just mist that daily...your mantis will then go there whenever he needs water.
