Could one raise a mantis purely through hand feeding?

I personally recommend either RainbowMealworms or TheMantisPlace for feeders if you are in the US. I get my blue bottleflies and banded crickets from RBM. They’re great for people who only keep small collections. I buy their 3/4 week 50 CT banded crickets (these are safe for mantises but you...

Could one raise a mantis purely through hand feeding?

Alright so I dragged in our local scientist to give their two cents. I didn't really want to say it outright, but I need to. The route you want to take would seriously harm any mantises you keep. By not feeding them proper food, they will never thrive and will likely die. If you are not able to...

Could one raise a mantis purely through hand feeding?

Exoterra does sell pre-packaged grasshoppers that have been cooked! I was able to sort of get my H. majscula to eat some of it.

Could one raise a mantis purely through hand feeding?

Ahhh no. Fruit is exactly what mantises do not need. Praying mantises are obligate carnivores and their digestive system is not built to process anything other than prey really. What you could do is simply buy dubia roaches, gutload them, freeze them to euthanize them, and thaw them out. Then...

    Hi from Canada 🇨🇦🇨🇦

Just because an insect is beneficial does not necessarily make it a viable means of pest control. I’m happy if you’re able to prove me wrong on this notion for mantises though. It’s just they’re still generalists and will eat anything they can get their little claws on. Including beneficial...

Are you fine with decapitating an insect? When I am low on feeders and need a quick fix, I'll just snip the head off a dubia and shove it in my mantis' face.

    Hi from Canada 🇨🇦🇨🇦

Welcome! Mantises are not a form of pest control despite what may be advertised! They are simply predators. They eat beneficial and non-beneficial insects. They make cute additions gardens either way. I recommend maybe trying to catch one outside and keep them for a pet. Maybe see how it goes...

Wanting Garden mantis in Canada, is it possible?!

The only native mantis to Canada is Litaneutria minor (British Columbia) so it would be the only mantis you could order from the U.S I believe. As for pest control, mantises are a poor choice. In reality, mantises are generalists. They'll eat your pests sure, but they'll also eat bees...

    Doodles/Sketches/Art Thread

Is the philosophy that religion degrades a person? If so, I have to disagree with that notion to a degree. It depends on what a person believes and how they use it. If we look at it from a purely neutral perspective. As Christian though, my actual opinion is different.

I can always draw a broomstick and beat you with it. If Doodlebob can do it, so can I.

Haven't been visit the mantis forum since covid, but it seems I'm not the only one.

Yes, it's something common happening to forums unfortunately. It seems like people don't recognize the value of our format though. It's perfect for archiving information.

adult mantis has been rejecting food, is it a sign of end of life?

Speaking from experience, if a mantis refuses food after not eating for awhile and has changes in coloration, they don’t have much time left. Refusing water is the biggest sign though I’d say.

let's start a thread of mundane occurrences!

I was bested by my mantis in combat. She took to whapping me viciously.

    mantis trying to eat itself?

Dude, he looks terrible. I would just give him a sip of water and place him in the freezer. There's no coming back from that.
