Gender and Mating of Chinese preying Mantis

It must be female. The male has been on top of the female now for about an hour but Im not sure it is able to attach. I think maybe because the wings on the female are longer than the abdomen. Ill send a picture later (battery died).

Gender and Mating of Chinese preying Mantis

I would like to mate 2 of the 3 mantids I raised. I think they are all males because their wings are longer than their abdomens. But one is much bigger and has five segments. Could it be capable of mating with a male or is it a male? They are each now in butterfly cages. If I want to mate them...

    Last instar?

Thanks for the advice. I was misting them twice per day but I will by a humidity meter because we have central air so maybe it is dry. I have one male who seems to have molted ok and another male that will molt soon I hope. The one with the bad leg seems OK, too.  I hope to keep all 3 males as...

    Last instar?

THANK YOU SO SO MUCH! I can tell you care so much about these amazing beings! I dont have the guts to do crush it so I guess I will use the freezer method. Maybe this is a stupid question,  but is there anyway to judge if she is suffering.Like  with a cat, you can tell from  their body position...

    Last instar?

The female I have is still laying on her side, wings shriveled up and dry. I fed her honey water which she drinks eagerly and today I fed her a small  cricket. It took quite a long time because she cannot hold the cricket herself (she tried). I have no idea if she can digest this stuff or how...

    Last instar?

Thank you both. I think the one with the long leg will survive but the one with the curled up wings-(parts of wings are turning black)- and its laying on its side and only moves when I move it. I think it is dying. I will see in the morning. Thanks so much, Dane and Cnemz, for your support!!!

    Last instar?

Addendum: I took the molting off the leg of the  "normal" one and it, too, has a deformity. He has 3 knees instead of one and he has been "grooming" one of the knees that has some excess tissue on it.Is there anything I should do, like cut off part f the leg? I feel awful.

One is hanging and has the molt attached to one of his lets. The other is on the bottom of the cage and is laying on her side...

What is protruding from its rear?

Thanks so much Predatorhousepet!  The stream on prolapse was very very interesting and your advice very helpful. I shall try the honey and an extra watering. Usually I spray the netting of the cage twice a day.

What is protruding from its rear?

Thanks so much for your response, predator housepet! Im not sure if she has been eating. There is something black coming out again. She seems to have a wilted look like she is not well, or dehydrated. She has been hanging upside down and  her abdomen has been "folded" or hanging down and you can...

What is protruding from its rear?

I am wondering if I could have pulled out some of its intestines by removing the poop that was sticking out.

What is protruding from its rear?

Im new at this and raising a few mantises from an egg case. This is the second time I saw this protruding from what looked to be the same part that some black stuff (poop) came out. This has been there for 24 hours. It is two translucent, yellowish spheres with a black dot in the center. I dont...

    Introduction

Hi! I am a new high school biology teacher from north  Jersey who spent the last 3 decades as an environmental scientist. I took an egg case to school which hatched and I decided to raise some of the praying mantises. They are now about 3 months old, not yet adults. I have a consuming question...
