    Threat Displays:Surprise, I'm not a Leaf!

@hysteresis Agreed. I don't know how the dead leaf mantises fair! (Their threat display is pretty alarming), but the Chinese Mantids are a delicacy here to the neighborhood birds. In terms of evolution @FeistyMcGrudle I know some organisms can express changes in as little time as the next...

    Threat Displays:Surprise, I'm not a Leaf!

One thing that always intrigued me were the threat displays of mantises. My thoughts often are, why are some so dramatic (eye spots and bright colors) while others are pretty neutral (colors between abdominal segments, but clear wings and other subdued colors)  I'm so curious on what triggers a...

    Just excited

That's awesome! I have 5 nephews (ages 6-11) who once they saw my female Hierodula majuscula, became OBSESSED with Mantids. So much so that their mother asks me for egg cases to raise them every year! Like MantiaGirl said, he will not very soon, so make sure he's not disturbed too much! Hope...

    Minomantis' mantis crew!

Ghost Mantids are a fairly communal species so you don't have to worry about attacks on each other too much! :)

    Too old to lay?

@Little Mantis Mama Hierodula is on her way out. I'm not getting an ooth from her unfortunately. She was such a good mantis! I'm letting nature do the rest. Everyday she grows weaker. She falls now and doesn't move for periods and then moves I know it's time 😕

I didn’t even know Bellatrix mated! Lol

    Too old to lay?

Have any of you had Mantids lay ooths before they pass?  Mama Hierodula mated on December 6th then again two weeks after. She was a healthy 5 months into her adult life and I did keep her a little warm so idk where exactly she was in her life cycle. Every time she mated, she seemed to slow down...

    Identity change (color changing ghost)

So if you look closely at the first image, you will see her. But this is where she was. As you can see, surrounded by green and next to the radiator. She gets the morning sun for about 20 minutes, heat and I mist her often.

    Minomantis' mantis crew!

Now that I know how to get pictures on here, let me update you all! So the first picture is when I first got Iris about 3 weeks ago! The bottom picture was taken today. From left to right in both pictures we have Iris (my one armed beauty), Mocha, and ButterRum (thinking of add verde to her...

    Going into the light

I was wondering what you all do for Mantids that clearly slowing down from old age? Like how long do you let them go before they go into the light? Mama Hierodula, is so clearly on her way out and I don't really know what to do. She's still alive, but she has slowed down significantly, her...

    Identity change (color changing ghost)

I will try and send a picture of where she is and what she looks like soon! I didn't want to disturb her "turning green" moment so I haven't touched her in a couple days. And there are many factors. Off the top of my head I know her surrounding were green, she was near the radiator so heat, I...

    Moral Dilemma

So topics like this can be debated for days, even months. lol  Here are a few of my ideas. I don't think they get 'bored'  I just try to base it off of are they thriving or just existing.  Thriving: showing good color, have a good appetite, inquisitive, molting regularly.  "Murder" is a strong...

    Identity change (color changing ghost)

My female ghost mantis named ButterRum molted about a week ago. She is a beautiful golden brown and just a gorgeous mantis. Since her molting, I put her on my palm tree plant that also has aloe and another plant (basically she's surrounded by green). The plant is next to the radiator which pumps...

    Promoting limb regeneration

I was just wondering if there is anything that you can feed feeder insects or I guess mantids themselves that will help them regenerate lost limbs? I know there are some instances where the limb cannot be regenerated, but just a thought that popped up into my head.
