    back leg mismoult

I'm wondering if anyone has had any success with 'assisting' mismoulted mantids to their next moult? Simply, a friend of mine has a sphod and his family were really interested in it and in 'meddling' they turned the enclosure on its side, restricting the space available to hang and moult...

    Wanted: Cilnia humeralis (wide-arm)

Friend of mine at uni wants these (uk) - maybe about 4, or larger breeding pair Jon

    Necessary coupling time

I am more of a tarantula sort of person but have been keeping mantids all my life and never really bred them... ANYWAY... I have a couple sphods going at it right in front of me now and have been at it since 10am (so 5.5 hours SO FAR!) Perhaps Christian can answer or anyone with lots of...

    [email protected] - aka *nickylee*

[email protected] - aka nicky lee I ordered a Chile Rose tarantula from him, it is now three weeks later and have not received the item. He said he sent it within the first three days of purchase and gave me a tracking number which I checked and today found out that it was FOR...

    Daniel D

I have to say this guy is amazing! He posted virtually as soon as I paid and they got here in great condition and really fast considering he's in Germany! I got three ghost ooths for the price of two and they look healthy and fresh! Definitely a guy to do business with :)

    Cameron Highlands project

Well, as part of my Applied Entomology degree I'll be spending two months in Malaysia (specifically the Cameron Highlands) identifying species that could be beneficial controls for the DBM. However, since it is a reasonably simple survey, I might have lots of free time :D :D:D Does anyone have...

    NEW LIVEFOOD!!!

ok, amongst other cool reasons for studying entomology at uni, I have just found the perfect live food for mantids... It is a small moth - so perfect for orchid, flower and gongys and it's called the Angoumois grain moth, (Sitotroga cerealella) - it's about 7mm long with a wing length close to a...

    Deaths Head Hawk Moth...

Just thought I'd post a few pics of mine that have just emerged from their pupae. Gorgeous things aren't they!!! - And yes, this is virtually identical to the Acherontia styx from Silence of the Lambs - if you've seen the film. It's also really cool if you have found one of these/ reared these...

FOR SALE: surplus BIOLOGICAL CONTROL mites

For sale: these mites are used to primarily control the sciarid flies - i.e. those little small flies you see soon after a cricket has died in its enclosure. You tend to see two types of flies in an enclosure- the big chunky ones that like to walk around a lot (fruit fly sized) - aka scuttle...

    Forum Question

wondering if this is just me but every time I go on the forum (at home, at uni and on my mobile) - when I click on a post that is dark (unread), it doesn't change to the 'read' colour until I go back to the main window. It used to change back when u went back a page. Hard to explain- anyway, is...

    Ootheca hatching time

Not sure if anyone else has noticed this but I am (at this very second) watching my h.grandis hatch out and I realised what everyone has come to believe might be triggered by light... i.e. we're all used to ooths hatching early morning (in general)- but maybe it's not so much a circadian rhythm...

    1.3 ooths...

I have two of those *still as yet not 100% sure on species, possible Stagmomantis Limbata* mantids and both were mated, and both laid two very nice perfect first ooths. I fed them continuously after that expecting 2 more... but instead I got a third EACH. i.e. they both laid the first...

what species at the aes? any chance of reserving some?! :D any ooths?

    shared lunch...

I just saw something i've never seen before... I was trying to mate some oxyopsis and so i gave the lady a cricket to munch on before i tried. I then put the male in there, close behind her and he gave that *interested* look so i thought all was well... He then mounted the female- but instead...

    Different morphs, same species?!

Well, I bought 10 or so nymphs a while back (they're still unknown in terms of species as I bought them as one thing and they turned out to be completely different)... But They all are exactly the same size, both have a light cream speck on their abdomen, about 3 inches long and light green...

Solifuge v ants (american soldier fun) *Language*

Saw this on a website, can't find the original link so i'm afraid you'll have to cope with a mirror... http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=18985 Thought it was interesting :)

    ooth removal

Ok, we've all been there- the mantis just laid an ooth onto your nice clean mesh at the top of the enclosure... only problem- it's her first and so you know there's a few more to come! How do you remove it?! - can't really leave it there because the crix climb to the top and will eat it I've...

    Ooth orientation

Perhaps coincidence but I thought it was worth a mention... I have two mantids in separate net cages adjacent to each other and one laid her ooth a week ago, the other last night... but they both laid it in exactly the same orientation. I just used a compass and they are aligned so that the ooth...

    "hairiest caterpillar"

I was browsing one of my regular sites a few moments ago and I came across this: http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=18729 titles "the hairiest caterpillar" - now I'm pretty sure it's not a caterpillar as they don't have legs - they have 6 tiny versions at the front and prolegs -...

    gestation period

I mated a few of my budwings 2 weeks ago and they still haven't laid ooths!!! I thought it was meant to be a lot quicker than this... I'm feeding regularly and lots, given them water, lots of climbing places (net cage) and still nothing :(
