    polyphemus moth pupa deformed

Well, photos would really be necessary to give any kind of opinion. I have had a couple minor deformities on pupated lunas but generally the caterpillars simply die before pupating. My vote before photos is to see what happens when it tries to emerge, might make an interesting pinned specimen. :)

    Figeater beetle stack

It took a bit of work to even get that photo, kept taking off and buzzing around the room, lol. :o

    Figeater beetle stack

If anyone is curious what the full beetles look like alive: http://www.flickr.com/photos/i_am_subverted/6028027690/ I have had a couple of these cross my path lately. Yeatzee, let me know if you want me to remove the link, 'tis not a problem.

    whats this?

Yup, that appears to be a type of bagworm. Totally harmless, just a type of caterpillar. Edit: When I say totally harmless I mean to you. Before trying to feed them to any expensive mantids, try it out on a chinese or something first. ;)

    Interbreeding

I think we would be able to agree on this matter, or at least agree that each other's position is sound, if we were talking verbally. The keeping/breeding of hybrids is a complex matter with many caveats needing to be met to "ensure safety" through the process and discourage the distribution of...
  6. What

    Interbreeding

It could be simply that those species cannot hybridize, that is quite often the case. Something that all of you might find interesting...hybrid speciation happening right here in the USA(naturally, no less)! http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~kunte/PapilioGlaucus.htm A very very very rare case...

    Idolomantis Consolidated

Something I had a lot of success with when trying to get mantids to take to mealworms was cutting off an end and placing that open end against the mantis's mouth. The species I have experience doing that with(G. gonylodes & couple CA native sp.) would generally start eating as soon as...
  8. What

    Interbreeding

My "ironic irony" statement is in response to your appearing to be deliberately dense*. If you are not deliberately doing so and your behavior(missing my very clear point) has not been intentional Dr. Phil (Rayner) then we should end our discussion right here as we will make no progress talking...
  9. What

    Interbreeding

Ironic irony right there. English is my first language, I will admit to the typo of capitalizing "especially" but aside from that I cannot find any real errors in my post that you(who cannot figure out the quote function, apparently) should be criticizing if your point was actually supported. I...
  10. What

    Interbreeding

Not entirely true... Especially with lepidopterans, some coleoptera(Lucanidae comes to mind immediately), and other groups where subspecies are exceedingly common. There are subspecies based upon things such as behavioral differences, host plant choice, distribution, coloration, etc and just...

    Velvet Ant help

Males are seldom seen but will come to lights and can fly, I think I have one or two in my pinned collection (or...in a cup of things to be pinned, lol). Females are, in all species I know of, wingless and most species' larvae are parasites of ground dwelling bee and wasp larvae. You would...

I saw your mentioning that nylon netting takes too long and... most people do not know about these* so I will spread the love, lol. Paint strainers from the hardware store - they come in 1gal and 5gal w/ the 1gal being about $1 each and the 5gal about $3, I would imagine that one of these...
  13. What

    Velvet Ant help

Survivor7, velvet ants hide, they are not always out and about unless that is how you have them set up and even then, as you saw, they will dig beneath anything available(ime). 85F is almost certainly not too warm, it might actually be a bit cool, depending on where the specimen you have was...

    Velvet Ant help

They feed on nectar so fruit/sugary liquids should work. If Im remembering correctly, Peter likes these quite a bit and has lots of experience keeping them.

    RED WIDOW

I would not be surprised at all to see a correlation such as that in Latrodectus, would make for an interesting paper too(even if nothing was found). I dont beleive any such work has ever been done with spiders... And I can only agree with that Latrodectus species have "quite similar" venom...
  16. What

    RED WIDOW

My phrasing was deliberate in both putting the least in quotations and saying they are "believed" to be, last I checked and it was a year or two ago, the general consensus on latro venoms in the USA was hesperus/mactans at nearly the same level of toxicity toward mammals, variolus being slightly...
  17. What

    RED WIDOW

Peter, rumors of Latrodectus toxin have been greatly exaggerated. Modern medical care has reduced the risks of keeping these significantly, barring systemic allergic reaction. Even so, L. bishopi is believed to be one of the "least" venomous, followed by L. geometricus with its primarily...

    Luna moth cocoons

I have some luna cocoons I would like to sell off fairly quickly. Im asking $6 ea or $25/5. Shipping will depend on the number of cocoons you purchase. These should be emerging in about 10 days, perhaps less. Only going to ship these out on Monday and I probably will not accept any orders after...
