ok so my chinese mantis layed her first ooth. I would like to hatch it and get nymphs as soon as i can. Should i diapause it before attempting to incubate it????? how big of a container should i incubate it in? Also how long does it take on average for the ooth to hatch? Im pretty exited about hatching it im just afraid ill mess this up.

I would like to know too. I want to wait awhile so I will put mine outside for a

couple of months. I am not ready to deal with so many babies.

No, you don't have to diapause the ooth before you incubate it. If you keep it at room temperature it should hatch in 4 to 6 weeks. Make sure you mist the ooth every few days.

Be prepared for a huge hatch, with nymphs running all over the enclosure. You might want to place them in a container with not only a vented lid, but with a hole large enough to put a funnel neck into it so you can fed fruit flies without opening the container and having nymphs get out all over creation.

Nicely put ;)

Could you Imagine all the containers you would need if every Chinese nymph lived past L3, and on that note don't be shell shocked when you have a big die off with them, it's totally normal with Chinese, most people get about 1 in 10 to adult, good luck! :)

Ya please don't follow my pass..... keeping 150 mantis same species i learn my lesson the hard way ... trying to keep them all a love .. now they can eat each other till 30-40 left then I'll separate them ..

im going to try to keep them together until i see them eating eachother. If i end up with alot of survivers il figure out some way to get rid of them once they reach lvl 3 or 4. should i put something in there for them to climb on when they emerge?

Yeah they say you should provide some hiding places to increase the amount of survivors. It's important though that these hiding places are as high as twice the size of the mantid in case it starts to molt under it's hiding place.

My Chinese laid an ooth on the screen and I want it to overwinter and give it to a friend for her garden in the spring.

1) I need to buy a new screen, don't I?

2) Should I keep the ooth/screen outside or in the fridge or....?

It depends on how well it is fastened to the screen. You may be able to moisten it from the outside of the sceen and work it free after it has dried for a few days.

If nymphs will be released into a garden then outside would probably be best so the eggs will experience the natural weather, and life cycle they will continue in.
