Hi all,

I'm Chris from the UK. I'm sure you could guess from the name lol...

Hoping to get my first ever mantis in the next few months and looking here for some advice :)

Cheers,

Chris

Welcome Chris. What kind of advice are you looking for, I'd be happy to share my opinion?

Thanks for the welcome,

Hi Connor,

I'm basically looking for general advice when it comes to enclosures for Mantids. I'm thinking of starting off with 1-2 Ghost Mantis so firstly, are these a good choice for a newbie? I've seen guidelines for enclosure sizes l and I was wondering if this is a per-mantis size, or would the same enclosure accommodate 2?

Secondly I'm not sure where to source the Mantids from so I'm wondering if anyone here knows some good places and/or members to order from.

Anything you can think of that would be helpful to a beginner would be appreaciated :)

Many Thanks,

Chris

Ok, ghosts are pretty newb friendly, and very prettty. They are small as nymphs so you will have to be comfortable feeding them fruitflies. When they are little you'll want to keep them in a 16 oz deli cup until they grow to a 32 or 64 oz. as far as I know a 64 should be able to last them their entire lives, I may be wrong on that. Anyways the general rule for enclosures is 3x the mantis length for height 2x for width. I would recommend keeping them separate until you have some more experience with mantis, or else you might end up with a dead one.

As for places to get them, I just got to the for sale page, look for what I want; then look at that breeder; see how many posts, their reputation. The best way to see if they are trustworthy is to go to the breeder reputation page. I've had good experiences with DeShawn(mantidkingdom), yankeeman, and am in the process with Kermit(he has lots of ghosts!), some websites are Mantidkingdom.com, mantisplace.com, bugsincyberspace.com, moonlightmantids.com.(somebody correct these if I'm wrong).

Anyways good luck with your mantis and feel free to ask anymore questions!

Hey chris ghosts can live their entire life cycle in a 32 ounce cup :)  You can get these super cheap at TSS which is in the U.K for buying the actuall mantis you can look up Terry priest on facebook, bugzuk and many other seller based in the UK. Or you can buy them from europe if you cant find some, but they are pretty common so should be no hard task to find them U.K side :D

Hello Moldveien,

Thanks a lot for this info. I think I've found TSS (The spider shop?) which looks great for enclosures. Can you please give me a link to Terry Priest? I tried a facebook search but couldn't find anything.

Many Thanks,

Chris

Welcome!  I'm sure you'll love ghosts if you go that route.  I started mine in a 32oz deli cup and just put a thicker layer of substrate so that the actual available area of the enclosure was suitable for their size.  Now I'm reducing the substrate amount as they grow.
