I've been thinking... why don't we have a Picture of The Month thing going on? Why not start one? It's not really official but I'm wanting to start a newsletter/webzine thingy so this photo could potentially make it to the newsletter (and even some of the runner-ups could also).

There are a few rules:

1- They must be photos focused on threat display, mating, or color variations within one species. These are things I'm focused on for this upcoming issue.

2- You have a max of 3 entries.

3- No photoshopping... just minor lighting adjustments and text added to a photo are fine. No more than that please.

4- The deadline is 10/31/11

So please post your entries below and have fun!

This is not a MAJOR newsletter or anything. This will be the first issue. Still considering the title. How does "Mantid Research Report" sound?

Here's mine from the UK forum. "Headless apicalis"

If I knew how to photoshop, I would put a "trick or treat" bag hanging from the arm that remained. I thought something was wrong with it when I first saw it, but I didn't notice how bad it was until I got it out. It was still meandering about and had to get a picture.

A little lighting adjustment. I still like my dancing mantis better!

Ain't those jaws something?!? This happened the first time I tried to pick her up. I'm glad we both got past this. Now it seems all she wants to do is be up on my hand, lol. (I'm just not crazy about it when she puts the "squeeze" on me). :pinch:

I haven't either. :surrender:

In the dressed up photo, I thought I saw a fancy bowtie, but now I see whats going on.

I might need to get some glasses.
You don't need glasses...in one photo in the series (My Dancing Mantis one) her mouth wasn't open as wide. This is another picture. I fired off a few shots while this was taking place...I was surprised she didn't lunge at my camera! :D

I put up another pic, dressed for Halloween, in the forum photos section, under "Happy Halloween".

Nice pics! I dig that you guys can capture the threat pose.

Gretchen, that wide-armed, wide-jawed shot makes me think about getting a chinese ooth in the spring. So fierce! You know it's a good shot when it makes you want the mantis... :D
